'Sandostatin' gets AIDS-related diarrhoea under control

In a multicentre study of 51 patients with HIV infection-related refractory diarrhoea, SC octreotide ('Sandostatin') 200-2000,ug/day significantly reduced stool frequency and volume after 14 days' treatment. Only 41 % of patients were classified as responders, however, the response rate was 61 % in patients without enteric pathogens. Faecal fat levels were significantly increased by octreotide and nonresponse was associated with greater increases.
