Salvation for Sudan Using genetically engineered

microorganisms to alleviate Sudan’s energy crisis

Conflict Since 1955 Sudan has been

plagued with civil wars between North and South Sudan.

This is due to cultural and religious differences that divide the country.

Aftermath Due to the war resources were

already limited. However the issue

only got worse when South Sudan

seceded from the north and now

holds 80% of the oil reserves.

The Problem The loss of the oil has shattered an oil-

dependent economy. Since their livelihood

and the country are built upon the revenue

brought in by oil.

Sudan is in desperate need of an alternative

fuel source

Proposal Sudan could greatly benefit from

microorganism-derived biofuels. Sudan’s

excess amount of large open areas makes it

the ideal location for the development of

microorganism-derived biofuel production

facilities.

Conditions Sudan receives an optimal amount

of sunlight to facilitate the photosynthesis needed for the production of these biofuels.

Creating fuel through this process has the potential to alleviate an enormous amount of poverty that is experienced in the country.
