St. Patrick Mission Statement
A welcoming parish called in FAITH to know, LOVE and serve God and neighbor in the HOPE of heaven.
SAINT PATRICK ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
3500 Washington Street . McHenry, IL 60050 www.stpatrickmchenry.org
Called To Be Agents of God’s Love in The World Through the Eucharist, Family & Community
Page 2 Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord Dear Friends in Christ,
This weekend we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord, transferred from Ascension Thursday. In Acts of the Apostles (the Church’s document that narrates her early life), the author, referencing the Gospel according to St. Luke states, “In the first book…I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught until the day He was taken up, … He presented himself alive… after He had suffered… during forty days …” (Acts 1:1-3). This was followed by Pentecost in order to ascertain that God is ever with us in the Blessed Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The Ascension (was) is not an abandonment of the apostles (Church). On the contrary, it is the realization of a new type of presence. In it, God the Father with His Son in the Holy Spirit, that is the
Trinity, remains with us, His Church, as He promised, “I am with you always until the end of the age” (Matt 28:20). This new Presence spurs the entire Church into action as conduits of God’s love and presence in our world. Prayerfully consider being a part of our Pentecost Novena (nine days of prayer) which started on Friday. May the fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit remind us, always, to be agents of His love, forgiveness and peace in our world.
Please keep our Montini and Religious Education children in your prayers as they begin their summer recess. On Wednesday we celebrated Montini’s graduation, virtually, through Mass streamed from Holy Apostles. We congratulate all our graduates. I also thank Mrs. Julie Stark (Montini principal), Mrs. Lisa Johnson (our DRE) and all teachers/catechists as well as parents for all the sacrifices they have made in order to nurture our children in the faith.
Wishing you all a safe and happy Memorial Day and Summer. God is with us.
In Christ,
Fr. Godwin

Word of Life
“Everyone is in need of reassurance, and if we, who have touched ‘the Word of Life’ (1 Jn 1:1) do not give it, who will? How beautiful it is to be Christians who offer consola-tion, who bear the burdens of others and who offer encouragement: messengers of life in a time of death!”

Saint of the Week
Saint Bede the Venerable Saint of the Day for May 25
(c. 672 – May 25, 735) Patron Saint of: Scholars
Bede is one of the few saints honored as such even during his lifetime. His writings were filled with such faith and
learning that even while he was still alive, a Church council ordered them to be read publicly in the churches.
At an early age, Bede was entrusted to the care of the abbot of the Monastery of St. Paul, Jarrow. The happy combination of genius and the instruction of scholarly, saintly monks, produced a saint and an extraordinary scholar, perhaps the most outstanding one of his day. He was deeply versed in all the sciences of his times: natural philosophy, the philosophical principles of Aristotle, astron-omy, arithmetic, grammar, ecclesiastical history, the lives of the saints and especially, holy Scripture.
From the time of his ordination to the priesthood at 30—he had been ordained a deacon at 19—till his death, Bede was ever occupied with learning, writing, and teaching.
Besides the many books that he copied, he composed 45 of his own, including 30 commentaries on books of the Bible.
His Ecclesiastical History of the English People is common-ly regarded as of decisive importance in the art and science of writing history. A unique era was coming to an end at the time of Bede’s death: It had fulfilled its purpose of preparing Western Christianity to assimilate the non-Roman barbarian North. Bede recognized the opening to a new day in the life of the Church even as it was hap-pening.
Although eagerly sought by kings and other notables, even Pope Sergius, Bede managed to remain in his own monastery until his death. Only once did he leave for a few months in order to teach in the school of the archbishop of York. Bede died in 735 praying his favorite prayer: “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As in the beginning, so now, and forever.”
Though his History is the greatest legacy Bede has left us, his work in all the sciences, especially in Scripture, should not be overlooked. During his last Lent, Bede worked on a translation of the Gospel of Saint John into English, completing it the day he died. But of this work “to break the word to the poor and unlearned” nothing remains today.

St. Patrick Catholic Church Parish Registration -
Do You Need to Register?
ARE YOU: (1) New to the parish; (2) Moving back; (3) Just Married; (4) At-tending mass but never officially regis-tered? (5) Even if you grew up in St. Pat-rick, you (as an adult—18+) need to reg-ister independent from your parents.
Please do not take your church regis-tration for granted. Attending Mass is not enough; there must be an official rec-ord of your membership in the Parish. Parish registration is essential for many reasons. It becomes important when you or your family members are receiving the Sacraments - First Com-munion, Baptism, Confirmation and Mar-riage. Registration is also required for those wishing to become a Baptism or Confirmation sponsor. In addition, be-coming a member of a parish gives one the identity of belonging to a family—the parish family of St. Patrick Catholic Church.
If you are not officially registered with the parish, please do so as soon as possi-ble. All you have to do is contact the par-ish office at 815-385-0025 or stop in dur-ing office hours and request a registra-tion packet. Registration packets are al-so available on the parish website at www.stpatrickmchenry.org—just click on Registration at the top of the home page.

HELP OUT OUR ADVERTISERS Our Sunday bulletin is an important way for us to communi-cate with you, especially during these days of the Coronavirus pandemic. It might be the only way that we can reach some of you. Every bulletin that you receive is paid for through the generosity of the businesses that you see advertised on the back cover. Most of these advertisers are members of our local community, and many belong to our parish. We urge you to think of them when you decide to have a meal or other item delivered to your door. Tell the business owners that you appreciate their support of our parish through their advertise-ments in the bulletin. This is one small way that we can work within our own community to weather the challenges that we face. Together we can help each other make it through. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc
