The Functions of the Skeleton

The three functions of the skeleton are:

• Support- Bones give us shape • Protection - for vital organs to be stored safely

inside • Movement

MUSCLES

Muscles work in pairs to move the parts of the body. They are called antagonistic muscles. In the arm, the bicep and triceps work together to bend and straighten the armMuscles are attached to the bones by tendons

SOLIDS & LIQUIDS

Particles of Solids & Liquids Properties of Solids

• Particles closely packed•Can be cut•Hard to compress•Has a fixed shape

Properties of Liquids•Particles further apart•Takes shape of container•Can be slightly compressed•Can flowExplain what happens when

solids mix with liquids:•Some solids dissolve in the liquids eg salt, sugar•Insoluble solids sink to the bottom

Separating solids & Liquids• Filtering – to separate an insoluble solid from liquid

The particles are tightly packed together. They don’t move very easily.

The particles can move around slightly so LIQUIDS can flow.

ELECTRICITYCircuit symbols

It is often difficult to draw electrical circuits, so we use circuit symbols instead. Wires are shown as straight lines between the different circuit symbols.

The difference between the symbol for a cell and the symbol for a battery: what we usually call a single battery, such as one you might buy for your torch is actually called a cell - it is only when you have two or more of these cells connected together that you get a battery.

Circuit diagrams

A circuit diagram is to use circuit symbols instead of drawing each component in the circuit.

Always try to make the wires straight lines, and don't be tempted to make them wiggly. The whole point is to make it easier to see what is connected to what

ELECTRICITY- PART 33. Switches • When a switch is open (off), there is a gap in the circuit. Electricity cannot travel around the circuit. • When a switch is closed (on), it makes the circuit complete. Electricity can travel around the circuit.

KEEPING WARMWATER BOILS

BODY TEMPERATUREAVERAGE ROOM TEMPERATURE

Thermal Insulators keep things warm and cold.

Polystyrene is a good insulator, to keep food warm.

Plastic and bubble wrap are good insulators too!

Thermal conductors allow heat to flow through them

Saucepans are made of metal because it allows the heat to flow through it.
