Cycling is a great way to get around in Santa Monica and is good for ourenvironment. Get out there and ridefor fun, exercise, or as a means of transportation.
Enjoy the ride.
Most bicycle riding is done on roads and streetsshared with motor vehicles. Every person riding a bicycle in a street has all rights and is subject to allthe duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle. Foryour safety and the safety of others, obey the rulesof the road as if you were driving a car – stop atstop signs, red lights, and signals before turning orchanging lanes.
Bicycles may be left with an attendant at the MainStreet Sunday Farmers’ Market located just south ofOcean Park Boulevard on the west side of MainStreet during market hours. This is a free servicefor those arriving by bicycle. An attendant will giveyou a ticket, watch the bike while you shop andretrieve the bicycle at any time requested. The Cityof Santa Monica hopes to expand this service toother events throughout the city.
For Farmers’ Market hours and locations visit theirwebsite: www.smgov.net/farmers_market/

Ride with traffic.Riding on the sidewalk is prohibited in theCity of Santa Monica. Ride on the rightside of the road. Observe stop signs, sig-nals and basic right-of-way rules.
Use Hand Signals.Hand signals tell motorists what youintend to do. Signaling is a matter of law, of courtesy and of self-protection.
Ride in the middle of the trafficlane in slow traffic.Don’t ride the line. Get in the middle of the lane at busy intersections andwhenever you are moving at the samespeed as traffic.
Choose the best way to turn left. There are two ways to make a left turn.
1. Like an auto. Signal, look back foroncoming traffic, then move into theleft turn lane, and turn when it is clear.
2. Like a pedestrian. If you are withina designated crosswalk, dismount andwalk your bike across. This is a greatalternative for difficult intersections.
Follow lane markings.Don’t turn left from the right lane. Don’t ride straight in a lane markedright-turn only.
Look before you pass or merge. Some riders also use rear-view mirrors.Leave 3-4 feet when passing a motorvehicle or another bicyclist. Give a clearwarning or call out “Passing on yourleft.” Make eye contact. Assume driversdon’t see you even when you may becertain they do.
Keep clear of the door zone.Try to ride a door’s width away fromparked cars. Keep to the outside of thebike lane to avoid the door zone. If youhave to ride in the door zone, ride veryslowly. You have the right to ride in atraffic lane if it is too narrow to sharewith a car.
Keep both hands ready tobrake. You may not stop in time if you brakeone-handed. Allow extra distance forstopping in the rain and heavy fog, sincebrakes are less efficient when wet.
Bicycling at night. At night, a white front light, red rearreflector, wheel and pedal reflectors are required by law. Wear bright orreflective clothing for visibility.
Don’t weave between parkedcars.Don’t ride out to the curb betweenparked cars, unless they are far apart.Motorists may not see you when youtry to move back into traffic.

Bike Route – a street designated for cyclists andmotorists to share the traffic lane.
Bike Lane – a designated lane for one-way bike trav-el on a street.
Bike Path – an off-street bike lane that is completelyseparated from motor vehicle traffic. On the path payattention to the posted signs, painted directional signageon the path and never ride where there is pedestrianonly signage. Riding single file is recommended; do yourbest to let a rider know when you are passing. Passalways on the left. Just over 2 miles of the 20 plus milepath is in the City of Santa Monica.
Bring your bike for a ride on the Big Blue Bus. SantaMonica’s Big Blue Bus is equipped with convenient andeasy to use front-mounted bike racks. Try one out; it’sfree with your paid fare.

Avoid road hazards.Cross streetcar and railroad trackscarefully at right angles. Avoid parallel-slat sewer grates, utility covers, painted and/or oily pavement, gravel and pot-holes.
You may leave a bike lane. When a road hazard or other obstructionexists in a bike lane, or you anticipate amotorist might turn across your path, you may temporarily merge with cautioninto the adjacent motor vehicle lane for safety.
Passing on the right can be hazardous.Motorists may not look for or see abicycle passing on the right.
In front, or far behind, notbeside! To ensure drivers of large vehicles(trucks, buses, and motor homes) cansee you, stay out of their blind spots.Never pass on the right side. Ride farenough behind for the driver to seeyou, and at least 4 feet from the sidesto avoid falling under a large vehicle.
Don’t risk it.Always wear a helmet. This actually isrequired by law for bicyclists under theage of 18.
Once you reach your destination, it is important toproperly and securely lock your bike. There are a fewsimple steps you can take to secure your bicycle. At a minimum lock the frame of the bicycle to thebicycle rack.
• To reduce possible leveragepoints on your lock, besure that it fits snuglyaround your bicycle andthe bicycle rack and thatthe lock is elevated off the ground.
• Using two different types of locks makes your bikemore secure, especially because each lock typerequires a different style of instrument to break.
• Do not lock your bike to sign posts, as these can beremoved allowing one to slide your bike over the top.
• If possible, be sure to lock your bike in well-lit, public spaces.
• Whenever possible, do not leave your bike parkedoutside over night.
• You are required to obtain a license for your bicycleif you will be traveling on a public street. Pleasecontact the City’s Business License Office at310/458-8745 for more details. The license numbercould come in handy if your bicycle is ever lost orstolen. If this does occur, you may contact the PoliceDepartment at 310-458-8491.
• For more information on how to get bike racksinstalled in your area please call the City’s ParkingOffice at 310-458-8295.
