Internationally renowned string quartets Music from the 18th to the 21st CenturyIconic film music performed live in historic and beautiful surroundingsConcerts, films, competitions, masterclasses, talks – all open to the publicUK and world premières

Following the success of Trinity Laban’s three previous festivals devoted to the string quartet, the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, will once again resonate to the sounds of string quartets (often paired with other instruments) as the Royal Greenwich String Quartet Festival returns for this major celebration of the genre and of our Conservatoire’s own chamber music programme.

Concerts cover the evolution of the string quartet from Boccherini, through the genius of Beethoven, to Dvořák, Debussy, Schubert, Shostakovich, Janáček, Philip Glass and beyond, including a ground-breaking investigation of the close relationship that has evolved, almost unnoticed, between the string quartet and film, in a theme recurring in many different guises throughout the festival. A focal point of the weekend will be the showing of the classic 1922 vampire movie Nosferatu, featuring a score composed and performed live by Quatuor Prima Vista from France. Come and hear Boccherini’s famous string quintet in E made famous in the Ealing Studio Film, The Lady Killers, and bring your children to burst with laughter at the first UK showing of a hilarious film of sketches by the

world famous MozART Group, including the Dental Ave Maria, Gypsum Kings (a quartet of four players with broken limbs) and Classical Pop Music, featuring a remarkably athletic and true-to-life performance by the quartet’s second violinist as Michael Jackson – as you’ve never quite seen him before.

Two days buzzing with students from all UK conservatoires attending a feast of concerts, masterclasses, competitions and talks, mixing music-lovers and some of the greatest professionals with a lot of kids having loads of musical fun…

Many events are free, all ticket prices very reasonable, special discount rates apply. All this, and a royal palace, just for your pleasure!

MozArT grOUP FAMILY FILM SCreenIng

A unique film screening for all the family, in which the music and not the words becomes the source of joy and laughter. Prepare to be amazed and moved to tears (of mirth) by the originality, musical and non-musical skill and the astonishing inventiveness shown in this series of comic sketches by the MozART group, for whom nothing in classical music is sacred, and yet in which the music seems to emerge as all the more precious and beautiful.

String quartets will never seem the same after you have seen the Dental Ave Maria, the MozART group’s version of Titanic, Eine Kleine World Music and Gypsum Kings.
