Round it! Rounding in 3rd grade Mathematics

Tara ObralITECH

Why do you round numbers in math?

When the question asks you to estimate.

When the exact number is not possible.

When an answer is to difficult to obtain.

Round the numbers to…

Rounding to the tens numbers 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90...

How do we round? Look at the right side of the number

If the number is 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, round it up one number

If the number is 1, 2, 3, 4, round it down one number

You can round the number to any place value.

Remember this! Rounding’s not that hard to doLet me tell the rules to you For the digits 5 through nineRound that number up a line. For the digits four or lessRound that number down, Oh Yes!

Example:Round this number to the nearest tens place:

= 4

4 is less than 5 so you round that to 0. If the number was 5, 6,7, 8, 9 you would have rounded it

to 10.

The answer is 0 because it is less than five, and you are rounding it to the tens place.

You try it! Round 6 to the nearest tens place:

Hint: The number is greater than five

Click me

You try it: Answer

You would round that number to 10 because it is greater than five and you are rounding it to the tens place value.

Quiz! Round it! Questions 1-3

Round 1 to the nearest tens place

If you answered.. 0 you are correct! 1 is closer to 0 and

less than 5, so you round that number to 0.

Round it! Question 2Round 8 to the nearest tens place:

If you answered…10 you are correct! Your round up one

because 8 is closer to 10 and greater than 5.

Round it! Round 5 to the nearest tens place:

If you answered…10 then you are correct! This one was a

tricky one, five is the middle but the rule is… 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 you round up one!
