Facts and Figures

• Bucharest is Romania’s capital city• There are 28,840,00 people in Romania• It is in south-east Europe• The coastline of the Black Sea is 1,935

km• Over 60% of people in Romania are

Romanians, Hungarians, and Germans.

History

• The earliest life in Romania was in the Stone Age(around 8,000 BC)

• In the 15th century Vlad The Impaler took over when the Turks invaded.

• Michael the Brave was Wallachia’s ruler at the time and was killed in 1601.

• In 1819 they joined the Allies against Germany• Jews and Gypsies were deported and murdered

during World War Two.

History

• When Germany started losing the war Romania changed sides and declared war on Germany

• In 1960 they adopted an independent foreign policy

• The Communist regime collapsed in 1989• They then became a democracy • They joined EU in 2007

Geography

• Romania is the 12th largest country in Europe• It has an area of 238,400 square kilometres• It is surrounded by Moldova,Bulgaria,Serbia and

Hungary• The Black Sea is to the south-east• It has temperate cold cloudy winters• It has sunny summers with frequent showers

and thunderstorms

Culture

• During the Communist regime theatre was highly popular

• They had a stable, state-funded budget• Movies were also very popular• Music and dance represent a large part

of Romanian culture• Romanians have a myriad of

mythological tales and poems

Sport

• Association football is the most popular sport in Romania

• The Romanian National Football Team has taken part seven times in the World Cup

• It was ranked sixth by FIFA• Popular team sports include rugby union,

basketball and handball• The national rugby team has taken part in

every world cup to date• Fighting sports are popular in Romania

Cuisine

• Romanian cuisine is a blend of dishes from several traditions

• It has been influenced by Greek,Bulgarian,Turkish and Hungarian cuisine

• At Christmas each family usually sacrifices a pig

• At Easter each family usually sacrifices a lamb
