We use design and ecology to address the planet’s environmental crisis at the landscape-scale.

Early experiences in Green Infrastructure

Challenges

We were surprised to see:

-Very high costs due to more complicated construction and/or contractor’s unfamiliarity with the technology;

-Unplanned maintanance requirements such as removal of sediment and trash;

-Plant failure due to improper species selection;

-Salt and plant-toxic chemical poisons;

-Project failures due to incorrect installation;

-Extreme drop off in permeable paver infiltration over time;

-Community residents who objected to large new plantings in front of their shops or homes;

-Experts determine their own design fee;

-Even once prices normalized a bit, we still saw very high SF costs for green roofs, bioswales, rain gardens, and permeable pavers; and,

-Last but not least, lots of resistance from existing maintanance and facilities management against these new technologies (greatly due to some of the reasons described above).

Restoration Ecology is a science based approach to preserving, restoring and creating self-sustaining ecological habitat

Similarities to Green Infrastrucure Engineering-Extensive study and research required-Hydrology and Hydraulogy-Design/Bid/Build process-Professional expertise

Differences with Green Infrastrucure Engineering-Focuses on more ecological benefits-Generally larger scale thinking-Less hardscape-Less manicured aesthetic-LOWER SF COSTS
