NEW DELHI, June 8:

Air passengers will soon berequired to share their uniqueidentity details at the time ofbooking tickets, as the govern-ment looks to facilitate paper-less travel.

Minister of State for CivilAviation Jayant Sinha today saidthe Ministry plans to introduce"digital unique identification"requirement at the time of book-ing air tickets.

Air travellers are already

required to carry a copy of theiridentity while entering an airport.

Now, a digital unique identifi-cation such as Aadhaar, PAN(Permanent Account Number),Passport Number is being proposedfor air passengers, Sinha said.

The Civil Aviation Ministryhas also set up a digital travellerworking group to provide sug-gestions on implementing thescheme.

Within 30 days, the groupwould come out with a white

paper and subsequently, com-ments from the stakeholderswould be sought before finalis-ing the norms, Sinha said.

Under the initiative, Aadhaarwould not be made mandatorybut would be an option amongother digital identities, theMinister said.

"This is a pull experienceand not a push experience.Passengers still have the optionof carrying a boarding pass ifthey so wish," he said at a pressconference here.

According to Sinha, theMinistry is studying proposalsand would conduct extensiveconsultations to ensure compre-hensive traveller coverage, con-venience and privacy. (PTI)
