TEEN REPRESENTION

STARTER

To analyse shots and sound in opening scenes.

To identify aspects of media representation of teens.

• We will play one side of the class vs the other.

• One player from your team must select a number and a letter from the board.

• The aim of the game is to try and match as many of the media terms with their definition.

• The team to get the most points - wins!

• How are teenagers represented in the media?

"Teenagers have always been behaving badly."

Key terminology

REFRACTION• When reality is bend or

distorted by the conventions or demands of those media forms.

STEREOTYPE• Widely circulated ideas or

assumptions about particular groups.

Refraction or Stereotype?

The negative representation of teens

• How are teenagers represented negatively in the media?

• What are the main characteristics of the stereotype of teens?

• Brainstorm your ideas and compile your top 5.

Cultivation Theory

• As audiences watch more and more film and television, they gradually develop certain views about the world, some of which are ‘false’.

Desensitisation

• If we are exposed to too much violence, or too much blatant sexuality, we will become less sensitive to real violence and sexuality.

Watch and answer

• As you watch the following clip, I want you to answer the following questions:

1. Who or what did media spokespeople blame for the Columbine shootings?

2. Why is it ironic that more bombs were dropped on Kosovo at the time of the shooting than any other time?

3. Why do the media want the American public to be fearful?

Analyse this…

• You are going to watch the opening sequence of Harry Brown, in which teenagers are represented.

• Watch the clip and complete your shot & sound analysis sheets, by circling type of shot and sounds used and writing a brief description of them.

cider.

Question:

• How has the director of Harry Brown used shots, sound, editing and mis-en-scene to present a representation of British teenagers?
