Vestas Wind Systems has

received an order for Euro 27

million of turbines to be

installed next year at the

Yambuk facility in the southern

part of the Victoria region in

Australia and is planning to

build a blade factory in the

region. The Yambuk windfarm is

the first stage of Pacific Hydro's

Portland Wind Energy Project,

and the order for 20 of its 1.5

MW turbines is part of the

agreement signed by NEG

Micon and Pacific Hydro in

2002. In addition to the order,

Vestas received sufficient com-

mitment from Pacific Hydro for

a total of 120 turbines at a total

project value of Euro 170 mil-

lion. The purchase commitment

is a precondition for the estab-

lishment of a blade manufactur-

ing factory in Australia,

announced by NEG Micon in

September 2002. Vestas says it

will establish the blade factory

in Portland that will manufac-

ture blades for megawatt-size

turbines. The blade factory will

be commissioned by next sum-

mer with an annual capacity of

100 blade sets. The factory will

employ 50 workers and require

a capital investment of Euro 5

million. "With Pacific Hydro's

commitment to carry through

the Portland Wind Energy

Project, there is now a basis for

the establishment of a blade

factory in Victoria," says Svend

Sigaard of Vestas. "However, to

have a stable wind energy mar-

ket in Australia in the long term,

it is still crucial that the

Australian legislation regarding

renewable energy is prolonged

and that the target for the use

of renewable energy is

increased." Within the past two

months, Vestas has received an

order for 26 of its 3 MW turbine

from Enersis of Portugal, 29 of

its 2 MW turbines from Terna

Energy of Greece, 35 of its 2

MW turbine from Italian Wind

Technology of Italy, and 31 of its

2 MW turbines from WKN

Windkraft Nord of Germany.

Vestas to build blade factoryin Australia

Within just six months of its

launch REpower UK Ltd, the

new joint venture between

wind turbine company REpower

Systems AG and specialist engi-

neering company Peter

Brotherhood Ltd, has secured its

first UK wind turbine order. A

single REpower, 2 MW, MM82

wind turbine will be manufac-

tured for Long Hill Energy Ltd

and will be installed at Long Hill

Road, near March, in

Cambridgeshire. The MM82 is

an IEC Class II machine and ide-

ally suited for installations in the

East of England because its long

rotor blades enable it to gener-

ate electrical power from rela-

tively low wind speeds.
