Global City Teams Challenge 2016 Kickoff
November 12-13, 2015Report Out: Smart City-Wide Broadband Network Integration/City of Chesapeake
Reporter: Rodney Bouldin, City of Chesapeake and Dean Skidmore, Motorola
Project Scope
• Description– Put broadband integration in place city-wide to
handle requirements for real-time data capture, memory computing for analytics, and data-drive decision-making in machine-to-machine environment
• Potential Lead / Partners – City of Chesapeake, Motorola, Verizon, Capitol Hill
Innovation, Elan Technologies, MiMoCloud
Project Approach
• Major Requirements / Actions– Remote meter reading in the office rather than the field– Reroute traffic around problem areas (e.g., accidents,
planned/unplanned infrastructure failures, mass evacuations, congestion, etc.)
– Assured security (high priority)– Real-time scene management with audio and video
streaming for large-scale incidents– Tracking of costly medical equipment during/after incident
response– Incorporate First Net Responder Network (DOC)
Performance Targets /Indicators
• Performance Targets/KPIs – 20% reduction in meter reading times– 10% reduction in traffic congestion times– Correlations in protocols vs patient outcomes– # of alerts sent to citizen/business when streets are closed– # of firetrucks, lost equipment, etc.
• Measurement Methods for Performance/KPIs– Remote data collection for key parameters– Logging traffic tie-ups during incidents– Statistical correlation analysis
Demonstration/Deployment
• Phase I Demonstration Scenario– Establishment of a broadband network
• Phase II Deployment Scenario– Expansion and use of the network
