Introduction
Marine designers often virtually build any type of marine propeller or rudder with
help from software that has comprehensive geometry definition. PropCad usually used
to prepare drawings for other types of rotating machinery elements, such as turbine
blades and aviation propellers. The easiest way to create a propeller drawing is withPropCad's Builder. In the other hand, Bureau Veritas has published software Rudder
that allows checking the scantling of rudders according to the requirements of BV rules.
HydroComp PropCad is the industry's most widely used propeller CAD modeling
tool. It is a propeller modeling tool for the automatic preparation of 2D design drawings,
3D views, construction data, and CAM file export for marine propellers, thrusters and
impellers. Designs of virtually any type of marine propeller can be prepared with
PropCad's comprehensive geometry definition. The easiest way to create a propeller
design is with PropCad's Builder - a 'wizard' that takes user design objectives and
develops complete blade geometry. This software is suitable for manufacturers,researchers or designers of marine propellers.
The main PropCad design form allows us to review the design in 3D. The various
menu commands call functions to define material, strength, tip, hub and drawing
requirements. Once we are satisfied with the design, we can create standard propeller
design drawings and table of offsets.This is where many propeller manufacturing
companies end their design. Using well-established manual techniques, these
companies will build their patterns using PropCad's various drawings and tables.
The following pictures are of sample designs that were built with PropCad. You will see
that PropCad can be used for many different propeller, thruster and impeller
applications.

It has recently been enhanced with new capabilities for those developing designs
for high-performance applications. The two significant new features includes the ability
to define suction and pressure surfaces of different chord length and, a cupping
"wizard" in PropCad's design Builder. The ability to define different chord lengths for
suction and pressure faces is critical for the contemporary section shapes being used for
high-performance applications. Designs for most conventional applications are based on
a style with common chord length (e.g. B-series, AU, and Gawn). High-performance
designs, however, often require a higher level of curvature to the blade sections,
resulting in leading and trailing edge geometries that do not begin and end at the same
chord-wise position. Designers of these types of propellers will find new PropCad’s
version fully able to handle these advanced sections shapes.
The Rudder’s software, it calculates the geometrical characteristics of rudder
blades, forces and torques acting on the rudder, the scantlings of rudder stocks, rudder
blades, the geometrical characteristics and the scantlings of rudder horns cross
sections, the characteristics of the coupling between rudder blade and rudder stock, and
also of pintles and bearings.
Rudder also is a small and easy to use software utility with a friendly interface
that helps the user in the scantling of rudders according to Bureau Veritas Rules and
IACS Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers. Rudder is free for download and
usages.

CONCLUSION
In ship maneuvering system, the propeller and rudder play the most important roles.
There are a many different types of blades and propellers in the industry in regards to variousvessel types with different operation and efficiency.
In this project, our group managed to complete the task given in time. Firstly designing a
propeller using PropCAD and designing a suitable rudder using BV Rudder is based on the
experience in ship maneuvering system. There are many choices of rudder and propeller in
both of the software. Thus, the propeller and rudder design is based on the type of ship, which
we design a 140m Oil Tanker. Our group decided to design a fixed pitch propeller (FPP) with
4.3m diameter and have 5 blades. By using PropCAD we have produced a manufacturer’s offset
data of the propeller. In the other hand, the rudder design has two stock bearings with spade
rudder and using NACA blades profile. Both of rudder and propeller design can fulfill the
required ship’s performance and efficiency.
Last but not least, we managed to draw a rudder structural drawing in order to show the
cross section calculations and measurements by using AutoCAD software. Blade’s cross section
is important in determining the position of nodes in BV Rudder software. By using more nodes,
the section produced will be more accurate.
