Evaluation of the Cosmetic Power of a Product in Reducing Cellulite and Local Adiposity

Introduction

Cellulite is a cosmetic term used for areas of the skin that appear like an

orange peel or cottage cheese due to abnormal accumulation of lipocytes

just under the skin surface. This accumultion of lipids usually occurs on

the thighs, buttocks, and hips of both slim and overweight women.

Formation can begin as early as puberty but it is most evident in women

over 30. Men usually have no cellulite because the lipocytes are located

deeper and their disposition is such that the adipose tissue is more

connective and flat resulting to less pressure on the skin surface. In

women, lypocytes are located under the skin in groups separated by

collagen fibers. When the lipocytes swell due to increased lipid

biosynthesis, the groups swell while the connective tissue (collagen)

fibers stay the same, thereby causing the dimpling of the skin, the well

known characteristic of cellulite.

Causes of Cellulite

GENETIC CAUSES :heredity, vascular diseases, atherosclerosis, varicose veins.

ENVIRONMENTAL CAUSES: diet, aerobic and anaerobic exercise, oral contraceptives, sedentary life.

Instrumental Evaluation

Thermographic measurements are taken with ELC plates.

VIDEOCAP: epiluminescence polarized light immersion videodermoscopy.

Aim

• Through the test one can evaluate if the tested cosmetic product has got a cosmetic anti-cellulite effect, in particular if its daily use can significantly change the skin parameters of compactness, smoothness, complexion, orange peel, nodules, microcirculation and the impendance values.

Test Subjects

• 30 females with cellulite, with an age between 18 and 70 years of age, have been selected for the test, following the undermentioned inclusion criteria:

1. good state of general health2. no dermatopathies3. no pharmacological treatment in progress4. promise not to change the usual daily routine5. no atopy in the anamnesis

Interstice between Adipocytes

Under normal conditions, the adipose tissue is well

sprinkled: the capillary vessels are very close to the

adipocytes’ cytoplasmatic membrane.

PATHOLOGICAL ASPECT-1st and 2nd stage

The first consequence of the venular stasis is the

abnormal endhothelial permeability followed by the

transudation of plasma into the interstitial tissue.

considerable number of altered adipocytes is

surrounded by a full-fledged capsule of

collagenous fibrils and consequently isolated

from the tissue.

The merging of several micronodules, having

microscopic dimension, give rise to so-called

macronodule, that can be detected through

digital palpation.
