WHO ARE THE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN AND WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first unit of African

American MILITARY aviators in the United States Armed Forces

• African Americans were very “segregated” at this time. Originally the bomber pilots they escorted disliked them because they were “colored”.

The importance of the Tuskegee Airmen was high

for most bomber pilots after seeing what the Red

tails could do• The Tuskegee Airmen

lost none but a few bomber pilots over the course of their service but lots lost their lives.

WHAT WAS THE RED TAILS ROLL IN WORLD WAR TWO?

The Red Tails Roll Was to be a bomber escort

• The Red Tails bomber escorting routine was terrific, They “danced their way through the bombers like angels” –Bomber Pilot

A bomber escort is a group of fighter aircraft that protected the bombers

• The group was called the Red Tails because of the easily identifiable red markings on the stabilizers, propeller cone, and the tips of the wings, And the red tailed hawk is an American bird of prey so you can see the connection.

The whole of The Tuskegee Airmen’s Service they only

lost a few bombers, 95 distinguished crosses were

awarded, 3 distinguished unit citations awarded, 1 known silver star, 14 bronze stars

And 8 purple stars. This is a big Achievement because most thought that African

Americans couldn’t But they did it.

WHAT ARE PURPLE HEARTS?

Purple Heart Awards Are Given To any American

Veteran Who was Injured or killed during service.

Purple heart are one of the oldest military

awards still given in America today.

WHAT ARE BRONZE AND SILVER STARS?

Bronze stars are awarded for Meritorious heroism in

the U.S. Armed Forces.

Silver Stars Are awarded for gallantry and

Bravery During Combat.

WHAT ARE CROSSES AND UNIT CITATIONS?

Crosses are The second highest U.S.

Military award.

Unit Citations are awarded for

Extraordinary Heroism.

ARE ANY TUSKEGEE AIRMEN STILL ALIVE?

As Of December 2010 roughly 58 were still alive, so probably not very

many.
