ThischapteriswrittenfromthepointofviewofVia–oneofthemaincharactersinthestory.ATouroftheGalaxyAugustistheSun.MeandMomandDadareplanetsorbitingtheSun.TherestofourfamilyandfriendsareasteroidsandcometsfloatingaroundtheplanetsorbitingtheSun.Theonlycelestialbodythatdoesn’torbitAugusttheSunisDaisythedog,andthat’sonlybecausetoherlittledoggyeyes,August’sfacedoesn’tlookverydifferentfromanyotherhuman’sface.ToDaisy,allourfaceslookalike,asflatandpaleasthemoon. I’musedtothewaythisuniverseworks.I’venevermindeditbecauseit’sallI’veeverknown.I’vealwaysunderstoodthatAugustisspecialandhasspecialneeds.IfIwasplayingtooloudlyandhewastryingtotakeanap,IknewIwouldhavetoplaysomethingelsebecauseheneededhisrestaftersomeprocedureorotherhadlefthimweakandinpain.IfIwantedMomandDadtowatchmeplaysoccer,Iknewthatninetimesoutoftentimesthey’dmissitbecausetheywerebusyshuttlingAugusttospeechtherapyorphysicaltherapyoranewspecialistorasurgery. MomandDadwouldalwayssayIwasthemostunderstandinglittlegirlintheworld.Idon’tknowaboutthat,justthatIunderstoodtherewasnopointincomplaining.I’veseenAugustafterhissurgeries:hislittlefacebandagedupandswollen,histinybodyfullofIVsandtubestokeephimalive.Afteryou’veseensomeoneelsegoingthroughthat,itfeelskindofcrazytocomplainovernotgettingthetoyyouhadaskedfor,oryourmommissingaschoolplay.IknewthisevenwhenIwassixyearsold.No-oneevertoldittome.Ijustknewit. SoI’vegottenusedtonotcomplaining,andI’vegottenusedtonotbotheringMomandDadwithlittlestuff.I’vegottenusedtofiguringthingsoutonmyown:howtoputtoystogether,howtoorganizemylifesoIdon’tmissfriends’birthdayparties,howtostayontopofmyschoolworksoIneverfallbehindinclass.I’veneveraskedforhelpwithmyhomework.Neverneededremindingtofinishaprojectorstudyforatest.IfIwashavingtroublewithasubjectinschool,I’dgohomeandstudyituntilIfigureditoutonmyown.Itaughtmyselfhowtoconvertfractionsintodecimalpointsbygoingonline.I’vedoneeveryschoolprojectprettymuchbymyself.WhenMomorDadaskmehowthingsaregoinginschool,I’vealwayssaid“good”–evenwhenithasn’talwaysbeensogood.Myworstday,worstfall,worstheadache,worstbruise,worstcramp,worstmeanthinganyonecouldsayhasalwaysbeennothingcomparedtowhatAugusthasgonethrough.Thisisn’tmebeingnoble,bytheway:it’sjustthewayIknowitis. Andthisisthewayit’salwaysbeenforme,forthelittleuniverseofus.Butthisyearthereseemstobeashiftinthecosmos.Thegalaxyischanging.Planetsarefallingoutofalignment.
