Guided Reading The goal of this guided reading series, is for you, the teacher, to get the most out of your small group instruction. Time plays a huge factor in our day and I KNOW we CANNOT fit it all in. I will admit that there were days when I would be trying to figure out what lesson to focus on with my students. I was sick of it! So I decided to create a map if you will. My goal is to keep these lessons as standards based as possible. There are several items included in this packet that will help you run your guided reading groups and even work stations smoothly. If you have not picked up my phonics or interactive notebooks yet, please check them out at my store. They can be a great resource for work stations or whole group instruction. How you group your students is in entirely up to you, but as a base model, I always group them based on reading ability levels and switch out my kids from time to time, based on their needs. For the high frequency words, I will include the first set for the first few weeks and then add the others as time progresses. On the next page, I have provided you an outline of how I plan to run my small group for the day. I would LOVE to meet with all my groups in one day, but I will be quite honest when I say, I just do not have the time. Our day is so compact that I rather give my one small group 25-30 minutes of quality time, rather than 5-10 minutes of mediocre teaching.
Guided Reading Plan Students read high frequency words from list 1. Time them for 1 minute and see how many times they can get through the list.
Give students whiteboards and dry erase markers. Put the HFW list away and read off words and have them spell them.

Conduct mini lesson #1. Vowel and Consonant recognition. Teach this using whichever tools you have at your disposition. I like to use magnet letters.

Use the sheets below to insert into your students data binder.
The first two sheets are gender specific and can be
sent home so parents can help their child practice at home.
You can make a copy for their binder or for your own
personal records.
The second sheet is for students to keep track of their own data. Once they can read AND spell the HFW correctly, they may color the image.
