• And Now Windows Vista AFTER 7 YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT!!

7

Windows is NOT keeping Pace with the growth

8

Why?

• Developers in the future will need more flexibility and room to extend the OS

• Open Source is the solution

• Free is the right price

• Linux is here and will change the computing in the long run

9

Enough Windows bashing

10

What is my point?

11

Which Distro do I really use?

12

Puppy Linux

13

14

Why?

15

Why?

• Extremely lightweight – 60 MB• Boots in RAM

Therefore extremely fast• All needed applications bundled together• Easily open word / excel files (once you mount the

hard drives)• Connect to the LAN easily• Option to connect and work on the windows

network

16

Puppy listed at No. 18 at distrowatch.com (March 31, 07)

17

Wizards

• Click on Desktop and choose Wizard

• Choose Network – Connect to network

• For Anything and Everything there is a wizard

• People love wizards and NOT commands!

18

Boot into RAMdisk

• FAST

• Frees the CD Drive

• you won’t hear much noise coming from your hard drive!

• And the beauty of working entirely in RAM is that whatever phishing and spyware is going on won’t make it to the hard disk!

19

Why not have your O/S run from RAM all the time?

20

Think: How about Linux based Thin Client?

21

Boot from other media

• To create a Puppy Linux boot thumb drive, you simply choose the option "Install Puppy USB card" under Setup on the Start Menu.

• The script will give you the instructions for creating the thumb drive.

• ease with which Puppy Linux can generate a bootable USB thumb drive version of itself.

22

The killer feature : rdesktop• rdesktop allows you to use any Windows NT/2000/XP/2003

server exactly as if you were sitting directly in front of it.• an open-source version of the Windows NT Terminal Server

client. • put my server's IP address in the data entry block below the

heading server. For e.g. 10.0.0.11• For the options heading, I would enter -a24 (for 24-bit color)

and -f (for full screen)• As soon as I selected OK, the screen would display my

Microsoft XP login screen. • Once I am logged in, it would be as if I were working directly

on my Microsoft XP server.

23

Highlights:

• Puppy Linux is not based on any other distribution. Puppy use a different binary package format than the more popular distros.

• unlike Damn Small Linux, which was originally derived from KNOPPIX

• Creator and lead developer Barry Kauler wrote almost everything from scratch.

• Giving way to many unique ideas that have captured the interest of Linux users

24

Applications: out of the box

• pdf reader

• An Internet suite, firewall, media player, word processor, FTP program, spreadsheet program, DVD/CD player/burner, and an IRC client
