Money Problems with a Quick Recovery
Credits: http://www.albany.edu/~wm731882/what_is_prohibition_final.htmlOne major reason why men were constantly going into Saloons is
because of the sharp and startling depression that occurred between
1920 and 1921. Thomas E. Woods, Jr. describes the depression; The
economic situation in 1920 was grim. In 1920 unemployment
increased from 4 percent to 12 percent, and GNP was at 17 percent.
After some serious budget cuts and lowered tax rates, by 1922
unemployment decreased to 6.7 percent and 2.4 percent by 1923.Although recovery was taking place, there were still many people
without jobs, or trying to get adjusted and acclimated back into their
lives. Alcohol is one of the things that were used as a crutch.

Saloons
Drinking and socializing at
the Saloon became an
honest escape from the sad
reality most of the nation

was stuck in. In the Saloon only men were allowed. Some men were
spending their whole paycheck and a large majority of their time on
the Saloons. It was a social place where middle to low class men could
let loose, they could talk about anything they wanted to and drink asmuch as they wanted. They would often talk about work, family, and
other stressors that they could not talk about anywhere else.

Prohibitionwas
boundto happen...
Women were very
much involved inmaking prohibition
happen. The WTCU Womens Christian Temperance Union forcefully
struggled to point out the dangers of men (their husbands, fathers,
and brothers) drinking uncontrollably. Finances became a serious
issue, women noticed that men were neglecting the obligations they
had it home which made it more difficult for poor families to access
food, clothing, and shelter (since money was excessively spent on
alcohol). Even worse, when some men came home to their
responsibilities - they would be drunk and abusive. Women were being
battered and this was not a good look for the U.S! Some say women
were simply jealous that men had the Saloons as a place to gather and
confer, whereas women had no social gathering grounds where they
can do as they please and say what they think. Prohibition was finally
put to work because the grievances women gave about their alcoholic
spouses drove their fight for suffrage and other equalities, which theU.S. did not want to grant. This situation really gave American men
an ugly reputation (weak, irresponsible, and drunk) so the
government took action by enacting the 18th Amendment.Credits: http://www.pbs.org/kenburns/prohibition/roots-of-prohibition/

The 18th AmendmentOn the 29th of January, 1920 the
so-called Dry Amendment is
implemented and enforced. Manyleaders fromother countries questioned this and wondered if its purpose would
be achieved. The purpose of this amendment was to restore the stability of men to
their families and other things in their lives. Unfortunately, things did not work
out as planned. President Herbert Hoover described it as a great social and
economic experiment, noble in motive
and far-reaching in purpose. The
prohibition banned the sale and use of
alcohol in America and it lasted from
1920 to 1933 when the 21st amendmentrepealed the 18th. It was ineffective
because Americans found a way around
the law; speakeasies.Credits: http://www.pbs.org/kenburns/prohibition/

Speakeasies were
social events with
alcohol and music
which were to be
kept secret.
Saloons were also
shut down, so illegal bars started popping up and hosting these
events. A secret knock, password or handshake could get a
prospective drinker through a door that appeared to lead to an
ordinary apartment, deli, tailor, or soda shop. Once inside, however,
there was plenty of drinking and entertainment, including torch
singers, cabaret singers, and vaudeville acts. Speakeasies were the
perfect place for the development of Jazz. There were events held at
the Cotton Club where Jazz musicians and bands would perform.
Speakeasies were also appreciated by women because they were notallowed in Saloon and now they had a chance to relax and enjoy good
fun. Prohibitions attempt to fix the behavior of Americans just led to
even lax morals, but it was a happy time from the outset - it was not
called the Golden Twenties for nothing!Credits: http://www.pbs.org/jazz/exchange/exchange_speakeasies.htm
