THIS MONTH IN CHEMICAL HISTORY

In my last column I described the beginning of the career of the chemist – and chem-
ical historian – Edward Thorpe. In 1885 he was picked to succeed Sir Edward
Frankland as Professor of Chemistry at what was then the Normal School of Science
and Royal School of Mines in South Kensington, London – later known as Imperial
College of Science and Technology of the University of London. He resumed work
on inorganic chemistry discovering diphosphorus tetroxide in 1886; and later phos-
phorus (III) oxide, a volatile low-melting reactive crystalline solid. It was this oxide
which was responsible for the horrible necrosis of the jaw observed among female
workers in the early years of the match industry. His continuing interest in photo-
chemical determinations of light intensity led to expeditions to solar eclipses in the
West Indies in August 1886 and in French Senegal in Africa in April 1893. Meanwhile
inorganic chemistry prospered with investigations on atomic weights of titanium and
gold; the composition of the spa waters of Cheltenham; manganese trioxide; phos-
phoryl trifluoride; thiophosphoryl trifluoride; fluosulphonic acid; vapor density of HF
at different temperatures; and the decomposition of carbon disulfide by shock.
Thorpe also worked both at Leeds and in London on the causes of coal-dust explo-
sions in mines.
Thorpe’s penultimate position, which he held from 1894 to 1909, was as Director of
the Government Laboratory. He helped design the laboratory’s new buildings in cen-
tral London. This laboratory was heavily involved in analytical chemistry related to
industry and Thorpe published papers on the determination of ethanol content of
medicinals; on lead content of ceramics; on the occurrence of paraffin hydrocarbons
in plants; and on a more precise determination of the atomic weight of radium. He
returned to Imperial College from 1909 to 1912 where he helped develop plans for
its new buildings which were completed under his successor, William Tilden.
Edward Thorpe’s great accomplishments led to many honors. After he retired from
the Government Laboratory he received a knighthood and was an advisor to the
Government during the first World War. He was Vice President of the Royal Society
in 1894-95; President of the Society of Chemical Industry in 1895; President of the
Chemical Society from 1899-1901; and President of the British Association for the
Advancement of Science in 1921. His honorary degrees included doctorates from
Dublin University, and ther Universities of Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, and
Edinburgh. He had many European friends including Victor Meyer and Mendeleef
who stayed with him when they came to England.
Thorpe was a prolific author of textbooks and reference works. His multi-volume
“Dictionary of Applied Chemistry” was first published in 1890 and went through sev-
eral subsequent editions. His texts on inorganic chemistry, quantitative analysis, and
qualitative analysis were standard works in their time. (I have a number of Thorpe’s
works in my personal library). And in the area of history of chemistry, in addition to
the “Essays” referred to in my first column on Thorpe he published a history of chem-
istry (1909) and biographies of Humphry Davy, Priestley, and Roscoe. Thorpe was
also a keen yatchsman; he maintained yachts at Salcombe estuary and wrote two
guides for sailors – to the Dutch waterways and to the River Seine. Sir Edward
Thorpe died at Salcombe in Devon, England, in February 1925.

April 13, 1760Two hundred and fifty years ago, Thomas Beddoes was born on this date. He studied med-ical treatment of disease by the therapeutic inhalation of different "factitious airs" or gasesand vapors and established Pneumatic Institution for Inhalation Gas Therapy in 1798.
April 15, 1710Three hundred years ago on this date, William Cullen was born. He was the first to noticethat heat is produced during compression of a gas, was born on this date.
April 16, 1921Marie M. Daly, the first black woman to earn a PhD in chemistry in 1948 at ColumbiaUniversity, was born on this day
April 18, 1864Samuel C. Hooker was a sugar chemist, who was born on this day.
April 21, 1889Seventy-five years ago in 1935, Paul Karrer synthesized Vitamin B2 (riboflavin). He syn-thesized vitamins A in1931and E (tocopherol) in1938. In 1937, he shared the Nobel Prize inChemistry for his investigations on carotenoids, flavins and vitamins A and B2 with Walter N.Haworth for his investigations on carbohydrates and vitamin C.
April 21, 1960One hundred and fifty years ago, Aleksandr Oparin died. He did studies on the origin of lifefrom chemical matter and extended the Darwinian theory of evolution backward in time toexplain how simple organic and inorganic materials might have combined into complexorganic compounds. He was born on February 18, 1894.
April 21, 1970The first Earth Day was founded by Sen. Gaylord Nelson, Father of Earth Day and organizedby Denis Hayes on this date. It is celebrated by ACS on April 22.
April 24, 1817Jean C. de Marignac, who was born on this date, discovered gadolinium in 1880.
April 27, 1896Seventy-five years ago in 1935, Wallace H. Carothers developed Nylon. He was born onthis date.
April 28, 1954Fifty years ago, Champion International was incorporated on this date.
April 29, 1870Atlantic Richfield Co., was incorporated on this day.

Sarno,Associate Professor of Chemistry atQueens borough Community College, acollege of The City University of NewYork (CUNY), received the New YorkSection 2009 Outstanding ServiceAward presented in January at the 2010NY-ACS General Meeting and Section-Wide Conference at St. John’sUniversity, in Jamaica, New York.
DAVID M. SARNO - 2009 OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD
Professor David M. Sarno is the recipient of the ACS New York Section’s OutstandingService Award for 2009. Professor Sarno was presented with the award at the 2010Sectionwide Conference held at St. John’s University on January 16. The OutstandingService Award is presented annually to recognize the efforts of members of the New YorkSection who provide their time, leadership skills and dedicated service in promoting qualityprograms that contribute to the excellence of the Section. It was first awarded in 1976.
David earned his B.S., M.A.T. and Ph.D. in Chemistry at the State University of New York atBinghamton. His doctoral work was conducted with Wayne Jones on the surface chemistryand self-assembly of mono- and multilayer architectures by transition metal coordinationchemistry. He then moved on to a post-doctoral fellowship with Alan MacDiarmid at theUniversity of Penn syl vania to study conducting polymer nanomaterials. In 2004, eager toget into the classroom, he joined the Chemistry Department at Queensborough CommunityCollege of CUNY. He is now a tenured Associate Professor teaching various levels ofGeneral Chemistry lecture and lab, and he also runs a research group with 2-3 QCC under-graduates each semester.
David became an ACS member in 1997 while in graduate school. He has attended and pre-sented at national meetings, and published in and reviewed articles for ACS journals. Sincejoining QCC he has become actively involved in the Long Island subsection of the New Yorksection, serving as Chair in 2008 and currently as Publicity Chair. He also regularly con-tributes to the annual Chemistry Challenge and High School Awards events sponsored bythe subsection. As of 2010, he is serving his first term as Director-at-Large for the New YorkSection.
David made a significant contribution to the New York Section through his role in the 40thMiddle Atlantic Regional Meeting in 2008. He began his involvement in MARM as Secretaryof the Executive Board, but, before long, he had become the all around “go-to-guy” and,eventually, found himself in the position of General Co-Chair. Meanwhile, and in addition tohis duties to the NY section and LI subsection, he was heavily involved in the creation of thefirst QCC Chemistry Department laboratory dedicated to student-faculty research. But mostexciting of all, he and his wife, Jenny, were expecting their first child in 2008. Their daugh-ter Olive arrived in July 2008. The new parents were relieved that MARM was long over.
In 2009, MARM 2008 earned a Chem Luminary Award for Outstanding Regional Meeting.Though the actual award is at QCC, he is proud and happy to share it with everyone whomade the meeting such a success.
David lives in Astoria, Queens with his family, including a leopard gecko named Moltar.

Seminar: “Design of Fluorometric High-Throughput Screening Assays for Cytochrome P450s”

The cytochrome P450s (CYPs) are a super-family of heme-containing enzymes thatmediate the metabolism of endogenous andexogenous molecules. Most studies onCYPs have been driven by drug-drug inter-actions and involve human isoforms.Recently, fluorometric high-throughputscreens (HTS) have been developed formajor human drug-metabolizing CYPs(CYP1-4) and used to screen drugs for CYPinhibition, but applications of these methodsfor rat P450s have been limited. We havedeveloped a fluorometric HTS specificallyfor the cDNA-expressed rat CYP2B1,CYP2C6 and CYP2C11 using the substrate7-ethoxy-4-trifluoromethylcoumarin (EFC) ordibenzylfluorescein (DBF). A series ofinhibitors were then characterized on theserat P450s as well as some human P450s(CYP2C19 and CYP2B6). IC50 values weredetermined for some imidazole-containinganalgesic antagonists (CC12 and MW-06-25), antifungal drugs (miconazole, sulcona-zole, clotrimazole, ketoconazole and flu-conazole) and epoxygenase inhibitors (MS-PPOH and PPOH). MS-PPOH and PPOHdisplayed time- and NADPH-dependentinactivation, suggesting that these com-pounds are mechanism-based inhibitors.These presently described assays will beuseful for studies of rat P450s.

2010 SECTIONWIDE CONFERENCE HELD AT ST. JOHN’S UNIVERSITY
The annual Sectionwide Conference of the New York Section was held on January 16 at St.John’s University and was enjoyed by over 80 members. Mr. Frank Romano, 2010 SectionChair, hosted the event. Highlights of the conference included a slide show review of the2009 activities, presentation of awards, keynote address by Dr. David Harwell of the ACS,poster presentations by Project SEED students, breakout planning sessions for year 2010and lunch at Fame Diner. Chair Frank Romano displayed photos of a number of the pastyear’s activities including the Nichols Medal Events, the Undergraduate ResearchSymposium, NCW at the Hall of Science, College Chem Challenge and more.
At the award ceremony, Dr. David Sarno of Queensborough Community College andGeneral Co-Chair of MARM 2008, received the New York Section’s Outstanding ServiceAward for 2009 (see page 7) and Mr. Steven Borneman of Byram Hills High School wasawarded the Nichols Foundation High School Chemistry Teacher Award for 2009 (see page15). Dr. Sarno and Mr. Borneman were cheered on by their colleagues and families. Awardswere given, also, to two students to recognize their achievements in chemistry. Theyreceived personalized certificates, Merck Indexes and ACS souvenirs. The two awardeeswere: Anna Chithelen who qualified for the prestigious summer camp for the ChemistryOlympiad competition – two years in a row, and Courtney Bissonette of Division Avenue HighSchool who won second place in the high school category of the National ACS’ poster con-test for National Chemistry Week. It was a pleasure having them at the conference to accepttheir awards. The Section recognized the contributions of Dr. Anne O’Brien and OfficeSecretary Marilyn Jespersen with beautiful bouquets of flowers. Dr. O’Brien had recentlycompleted nine successful years as District One Director for the ACS. Dr. Hiroko Karan,2010 Chair Elect, next presented the names of the candidates for the upcoming 2010 elec-tions and introduced those who were present.
Dr. David Harwell, Assistant Director of Career Management and Diversity Programs at ACS,gave a timely and interesting keynote presentation titled “ACS Careers: The Best SecretThat You Never Knew.” Dr. Harwell presented an excellent overview of the career servicesthat can be accessed as a member of the ACS, with emphasis on the considerable numberof benefits specifically for unemployed members. Attendees acquired a wealth of usefulinformation on ACS career services and especially enjoyed the virtual interview.
Project SEED students, along with Project SEED coordinator Nadia Makar, traveled far toattend the conference and to present their research results. Their posters were excellentand their appreciation of the support from the section was evident. Project SEED studentElaine Gomez spoke on behalf of the students to thank the Section for its Project SEEDfunding and for the opportunity of doing research with chemists throughout the Section.Break out planning sessions followed. The conference concluded with the traditional lun-cheon with colleagues — this year at Fame Diner.

MR. STEVEN BORNEMAN — NICHOLS FOUNDATION HIGHSCHOOL CHEMISTRY TEACHER AWARD
Mr. Steven Borneman of Byram Hills High School is the recipi-ent of the 2009 Nichols Foundation High School ChemistryTeacher Award. He was presented the award by Mr. StephenRadice, Co-Chair of the Nichols Foundation Teacher AwardCommittee, at the New York Section’s General Meeting andSectionwide Conference held on January 16, 2010 at St. John’sUniversity, Jamaica, NY. The award is presented annually torecognize highly effective teaching and inspirational leadershipto students in chemistry. The award was established in 1958and consists of a plaque and $1000, funded by the NicholsFoundation. Steven Borneman exemplifies the qualities of anoutstanding, highly effective and inspirational teacher.
Steven received his B.S. in chemistry, a M.A.T in chemistry anda M.S. in chemistry from Binghamton University. Steven alsohas a New York State Permanent Certification in Chemistry.
Presently, Steven is teaching at Byram Hills High School inArmonk, New York. Prior to this, he taught in the Chenango Forks School District as a high schoolchemistry teacher and 8th grade physical science teacher. While he was at Binghamton Universityhe worked as an adjunct instructor, a teacher assistant for the department of chemistry and aresearch assistant. His research involved “ Green Synthesis: Using Room Temperature Ionic Liquidsfor Electroorganic Synthesis.”
Courses taught by Steven include AP Chemistry, Regents chemistry, SAT II Level chemistry andScience Research Program.
Steven uses effective techniques to capture the interest of his students. He believes that all chem-istry lessons should be real, fun, exciting and challenging. He uses shock factors or discrepantevents such as putting a test tube filled with hot melted paraffin wax into a beaker of ice water andseeing a flame shoot out to the ceiling. He demonstrates bonding principles by bending a trickle ofwater with a balloon and by asking the students to explain the difference in rate of evaporation whenacetone, ethanol and water are rubbed on the board.
Steven challenges and inspires students by involving them in various projects. One such project isthe “Ghosts of Chemistry Past”. Each student selects an influential chemist of the past, creates atombstone that includes a detailed epitaph and delivers a presentation (dressed as the chemist theyresearched) that emphasizes scientific contributions. The tombstones created by the students arepresented to the entire school in a hallway called the “graveyard of chemistry past.” To really get intothe spirit of this ghostly idea, this project is always done in the vicinity of Halloween Day.
Steven successfully started a Chemistry Lab and Teaching Assistant program in his school. Thiscourse gives high level students the responsibility of developing lesson plans, giving in-class supportto struggling students and developing labs. This serves the purpose of allowing students to achievea deeper understanding of chemistry concepts.
Although Steven received the award for high school chemistry, one of his biggest contributions is toinspire elementary aged students into the world of science. Steven developed a 4th grade presen-tation to students that includes exciting chemistry demonstrations such as pouring a colorless liquidinto an apparently empty beaker and seeing the liquid turn pink. He also developed 5th grade sci-ence night in which students are invited to the high school to perform hands on science experimentsthat include electricity, alchemy, bottle rockets and fingerprints. In Stevens own words “ it is nevertoo early to initiate a student’s curiosity in chemistry.”
At the same time, Steven keeps up to date with his own education. He recently has taken coursesthat include: Teaching the gifted and talented, Encouraging student responsibility and Successfulteaching for the acceptance of responsibility.
Debra Cayea, Science Department Chairperson at Byram Hills High School writes “ Mr. Bornemanmodels how science is fun and he extends himself and expertise well beyond his high school class-room. He is sure to share his contagious excitement and knowledge of chemistry with all his stu-dents and offers his expertise and guidance to other staff members including mentoring less experi-enced teachers.”
One of Steven’s students writes: “There is only one reason that I have chosen to pursue chemistry:Mr. Borneman. He has an uncanny way to make chemistry not only intelligible but also fun and excit-ing. Mr. Borneman instills an insatiable thirst for knowledge in chemistry that keeps me continuallydigging deeper.”

ObituariesJOSEPH L. ZUCKERMAN
Joseph L Zuckerman died November 5, 2009at age 77. He resided in Livingston, NJ.During his 55 year career as an industrialPolymer Chemist. Joe received 13 patentsand published 12 professional papers.
He specialized in adhesives, coatings, tex-tiles and elastomers. In the 1960s and 70s,Joe was employed as a technical director forpolymer product development by AlliedChemical in Morristown NJ and later by JPStevens in Garfield NJ. During the 1980s and90s he was employed by Stanbee and thenElektromek, both in Carlstadt NJ. Joe pub-lished his first paper when he was 13 yearsold. He graduated from the Bronx HighSchool of Science and Brooklyn College witha BS in Chemistry. Joe is survived by hiswife, Elaine, his son, Dan, and two grandchil-dren.

Eugene Brown passed away on January 21,2010, at his home in the Village ofHempstead, New York, at the age of 78. Hereceived his bachelor’s and master’s degreesfrom New York University and then went on toserve his country in the Korean War. Geneworked in industry for a short time as anorganic chemist and he successfully com-pleted a number of patents. He then joinedthe faculty of the Chemistry Department atNassau Community College where heworked for some 40 years and served asChairman from 1969 to 1973. Gene was veryactive in the Long Island subsection of theNew York section of the ACS, serving asChair in 2007 and later as Director-at-Large.Eugene was also a successful entrepreneurand co-owner of Betar Pharmacy and Houseof Herbs. He is survived by his beloveddaughter, Kathy; his son-in-law, Roberto; histhree grandchildren, Elise, Jenele, andEugene; their grandmother Sylvia Lovell; anda host of nieces, nephews, relatives, andfriends.

Three topics will be covered:
1) The design of a 1,000 MW solar power
plant generating liquid hydrogen to be
stored and transported the same way as
LNG is today.
2) Lipták's invention, the reversible fuel cell
(RFC), which makes solar energy contin-
uously available, by making hydrogen
when the sun is out and using it to make
electricity when it is not.
3) The energy-free home with roof covered
with solar shingles, using solar sidings
and windows and provided with grid-con-
nected two directional electric meters.
Mr. Lipták arrived from Hungary in the
United States in 1956. In 1960, he became
the Chief Instrument Engineer at C&R (later
John Brown). In 1987, he was an adjunct
professor at Yale University and he is cur-
rently working as a consultant with some
help (Lipták Associates PC) on industrial
optimization. He has published two dozen
technical books including: "Post-Oil Energy
Technology", "Optimization of Unit
Operations" and "Environmental Engineers'
Handbook".

By now you probably all know the story of theindefatigable John Crowley — a leading execu-tive in a major pharmaceutical company, entre-preneur, who now serves as CEO of one of NewJersey’s most promising biotechnology compa-nies. And let’s not forget, Naval Intelligence offi-
cer, husband and Dad.
And Aileen, an equally remarkable partner andmother who John readily credits as the true herohere.
Having the great honor and pleasure of knowingJohn and their incredible story, I can tell you thatextraordinary is an understatement. When I firstmet John and without knowing his story, I recog-nized a certain star quality, a presence, a glow, agleam in his eye. If you have met him, you knowwhat I mean. Little did I know that he would soonbe putting that star quality to work in a way thatwould make us all better for it.
And have no doubt. The movie you are about tosee will confirm that.
One of the reasons we at BioNJ and at HINJwanted to do this premier event is not to give theCrowley’s any more fans (how many fans canone have?)
Not to give the story any more exposure and notto help John sell books.
What we want to accomplish here this evening isto make sure we do not miss the critically impor-tant message of innovation that this storydepicts.
What we hope you and the rest of the world willnot miss is the time, the struggle, the cost withand more importantly, the cost without theseinnovations.
It takes 10-12 years of round the clock research,hundreds of patients taking on the risk of clinicaltrials, scores of meetings with venture capitalistsmuch like you will see in the movie, tedioussometimes heartbreaking communications withthe FDA and a BILLION, yes a BILLION DOL-LARS to bring a drug to market.
That is why this movie is so important.
It tells the story of the struggle to innovation thatresearchers across the country and around theworld and proudly throughout NJ live every day.
It tells the story of how difficult it is to bring a drugto market and how important it is to do so.
It is this drive to not accept the unacceptable —to find new therapies and cures — that fuels aquest for innovation which I believe sets ourindustries apart from all others. And that innova-tion will mean the difference between therapiesand cures, pain and promise, and life and death.

ChemTAG CornerSolution Conductivity and pH

Objective: Students use probe ware to
determine the pH and conductivity of sever-
al common aqueous solutions.
Pre-Lab: Students should be familiar with
the basic differences between ionic and
covalent compounds as they relate to the
differences in solubility and conductivity in
aqueous solution, the fundamental differ-
ences in properties between ions and mole-
cules how to name ionic compounds given
formulae and a chart of common ions with
oxidation numbers and the pH scale and its
range of values. They should be familiar
with the use of probe ware with a pc or a
Mac to collect real time data in the lab.
Materials:
pc or Mac
probe interface with two channels
pH probe
conductivity probe
50 to 75 mL of the following solutions in
beakers or plastic cups:
HCl 0.1M
vinegar
dilute citric acid
carbonated water
distilled water
soapy water adjusted to pH 8
clear window cleaner
limewater
NaOH 0.1M
Procedure: Each team or group will test
the eight solutions for both pH and conduc-
tivity, simultaneously. Program the software
to collect data in the “Events with Entry”
mode. Have a display of two bar graphs in
real time. On the x axes one unit is needed
for each solution to be tested. The y axis
should range from 0 to 14 for the pH graph
and from 0 to 5000 mS/cm for conductivity
data. After data collection is complete use
the software to sort the data by pH from 1 to
14 before they save their copy or print. See
sample.
Data Analysis: The active ingredient of
each solution is given to the students.
Students are required to produce correct for-
mulae. Limit students to the Arrhenius defi-
nition.
The bar graphs display highest conductivity
corresponds with the extremes in pH.
Students plot another graph of pH vs con-
ductivity. See sample. This graph shows an
inverse bell curve which describes the rela-
tionship between conductivity and pH. If
high values are obtained for the carbonated
water, students may conclude this is due to
dissolved minerals depending upon water
chosen.
Conclusion: At the end of this experiment
students should be able to distinguish
between acids and bases, the ions they con-
tain, the relative numbers of ions present
and the value of the pH.

Press Release$2.9 MILLION NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION GRANTATTRACTS MINORITIES TOSTEM FIELDS
The University of Texas at El Paso has re -ceived a five-year grant from the NationalScience Foundation (NSF) for nearly $2.9 mil-lion.
The “Science for a Sustainable Future:Developing the Next Generation of DiverseScientists” award will provide fellowships tominority graduate students in NSF-supporteddisciplines such as science, technology, engi-neering, and mathematics (STEM). The doc-toral students will build their science andteaching portfolios and bring their leadingresearch findings into K-12 learning settingsin an effort to inspire the next generation ofscientists.
The fellows will serve as a STEM resource forEl Paso’s Early College High School (ECHS)science teachers and as mentors for the stu-dents, helping them build practical under-standings of science.
“This success in securing federal fundingfrom the National Science Foundation is agood example of the quality of competitiveproposals UTEP faculty generate, integratingeducation and research benefiting our stu-dents and consistent with UTEP’s mission,”said Roberto Osegueda, vice president ofresearch and sponsored projects.
A recruitment effort for beginning doctoral stu-dents is under way for the program, calledNSF Graduate STEM Fellows in K-12Education. Aaron Velasco, Ph.D., chair ofgeological sciences; Vanessa Lougheed,Ph.D., assistant professor in biological sci-ences; and William Robertson, Ph.D., associ-ate dean of the College of Education are thefaculty leaders who are recruiting incomingdoctoral students for the program.
The fellows will help develop ECHS’s sciencecurriculum around the theme “Science for aSustainable Future,” with a particular focus onthe arid Southwest. Specific challenges fac-ing our border desert populations will beaddressed:
• Limited water resources in a changing cli-mate
• The potential for alternative energyresources
• A rapidly growing, diverse population andenvironmental health issues in a multi-
national community
• Geological hazards facing the region
“The idea is to give these students real expo-sure to the scientific challenges of the regionand hopefully inspire them to go into STEMfields,” Velasco said.
The ECHS, recently established in El Paso,brings an innovative approach to high schooleducation by reaching out to young peoplecurrently underrepresented in higher educa-tion, enabling them to earn up to two years ofcollege credit in addition to their high schooldiploma, and providing them with the skills toincrease their success in college.
One of the goals of this new grant is to com-plement the current partnership betweenUTEP and the ECHS and to help facilitate thetransition to a four-year university.
The NSF grant complements other trainingefforts at UTEP and serves to enhance therole of one of the top three Hispanic degree-granting universities in the U.S. as an emerg-ing hub of research and training activitiesinvolving the next generation of Hispanic sci-entists and engineers.
With its growing Ph.D. programs, top faculty,and current demographic, UTEP is poised tolead the way for training minority Ph.D. futurescientists and leaders.
