Report developed by PRME Secretariat with additional information from the PRME Steering Committee:
2011 Annual Report and 2012 Outlook
The Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), an initiative supported by the United Nations Global Compact, is a voluntary engagement platform for business schools and management education-related institutions. An organisation that signs on to PRME expresses its conviction that academic institutions, through the integration of universal values into curriculum and research, can contribute to a more stable and inclusive global market and help build prosperous and thriving societies. During 2011, the PRME Secretariat, the Steering Committee and PRME partners have worked hard to continue to give PRME participants valuable opportunities to implement the Principles and engage with the PRME community – especially at a regional level. As of 15 December 2011, PRME welcomed 70 new Signatories, bringing the total to over 400 institutions representing 77 countries. This is an important milestone for our goal to reach at least 1000 Signatories by 2015. We have also seen an increasing number of activities within the PRME community that relate to knowledge exchange and thought leadership, such as an analysis report on the first 100 Sharing Information on Progress (SIP) reports, the continuous intake of SIPs, and the launch of the PRiMEtime blog. The PRME Secretariat also developed logos for the Six Principles, which are available for use by participants via the PRME website and included in the Annex.
Statistical breakdown by region (October 2011)
PRME’s strategic goals are to:
I. Increase number of participants to 1000 by 2015 (the Annex includes a graph tracking the number of new participants per month) and
II. Enhance the quality of participant engagement. In line with these strategic goals, the following report outlines the actions and activities by the PRME Secretariat, PRME Steering Committee members, and PRME Participants, individually and/or collectively.

Regional Meetings 2011 Of particular importance in 2011 was the PRME Summit in June in Brussels, jointly organised by EFMD, GRLI and the PRME Secretariat, which brought together over 200 participants. In her keynote speech at the Summit, H. Elizabeth Thompson, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Coordinator for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), highlighted the 3rd PRME Global Forum for Management Education as the main platform for management schools to participate in the Rio+20 process. In addition to the regional meeting noted below, separate letter campaigns were started for schools specifically in Japan, China, and Korea. These outreach efforts resulted in 70 new signatories (see Appendix for details).

Meetings 2012 Next June, the United Nations will bring the world together in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to discuss and plan for a healthier, more equitable and prosperous world for all. “Rio+20” -- the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development – will provide an opportunity to envision the world we want to see in 20 years and a platform that offers a more sustainable way of doing things. As Rio+20 will underline, critical action is required of all major actors in business, government and society to build the foundations for a sustainable global economy, society and biosphere. Business schools, management-related academic institutions and universities have a unique role to play in this regard. This is why we are organising the 3rd Global Forum for Responsible Management Education as the official side-meeting for management-related academic institutions at Rio+20, to take place on 14-15 June 2012. In addition to the events of Rio, PRME will support such activities as: Date (2012) Title Location Additional Information Partners

Facilitators: Maureen Kilgour, Université de Saint-Boniface, Canada, and Patricia M. Flynn, Bentley University, US
The Working Group held its first webinar in November and is now actively recruiting members to contribute to an online repository of syllabi, case studies, research papers, and other academic resources. Please contact the PRME Secretariat if you are interested in joining the group or contributing to the repository.
PRME Working Group on Anti-Corruption
Facilitator: Prof. Matthias Kleinhempel, IAE Business School, Argentina
The Working Group has been active in developing content for the Anti-Corruption Curriculum Toolkit through a series of webinars and face-to-face meetings in May and December 2011. The project aims at promoting ethical decision-making and anti-corruption competencies at the post-baccalaureate level by offering business schools and management-related academic institutions substantive anti-corruption guidelines for curriculum change with the aim of teaching students to take effective and ethical decisions that benefit both business and society.
PRME Working Group on Poverty, a Challenge for Management Education
Facilitators: Milenko Gudić, IMTA Managing Director, CEEMAN and Al Rosenblum, Professor, Dominican University, US
In July 2011, PRME Steering Committee member CEEMAN hosted the first workshop of the PRME Working Group on Poverty. The outcomes of the workshop included an action plan by the Working Group to prepare a Report on Fighting Poverty through Management Education: Challenges, Opportunities and Solutions for presentation at the 3rd PRME Global Forum. The report will be based upon a survey on the Issue of Poverty in Management Education, which closed on 9 December, was available in 5 languages, and received responses from 52 countries.
PRME Inspirational Guide
Facilitator: Manuel Escudero, Deusto Business School, Spain
In preparation of the 3rd PRME Global Forum, we are currently developing a resource that highlights inspiring examples on how to answer some of the most frequently asked questions regarding how to implement PRME. Examples have been drawn from 50 of the most engaged PRME participants.

PRME Working Groups (continued) PRME WG on Sharing Information on Progress (SIPs)
Facilitator: Jose Manuel Alcaraz, PRME Researcher
This Working Group aims to create awareness, encourage and facilitate research, discussion and exchange of relevant issues around SIPs that inspire other Signatories to implement truly relevant initiatives, and influence other business schools and organisations to join and expand PRME.
50+20 – Management Education for the World Project
In the course of the last months, the PRME Secretariat has merged efforts with the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative (GRLI) and the World Business School Council for Sustainable Business for the“50+20” Project. The group has since gained the support of a wider network of partners and individuals who are working to produce an agenda for “future” management education. We are gathering insights and emerging examples from management schools around the world, i.e. those programs and policies that have taken a risk to do something altogether new and different. The 50+20 project will include a new paradigm – as well as relevant examples of existing and emerging best practices that illustrate how management schools, in their pursuit of this new paradigm, are taking action today. Based on the Sharing Information on Progress (SIP) reports, good practices will be highlighted. For additional information, please see the 50+20 Project site. Should you wish to contribute further examples, please contact PRMESecretariat@unprme.org.

This book chapter makes the case that corporate social responsibility (CSR) mainstreaming is an imperative to promote integrity and alleviate the strong entrenchment of utilitarian perspectives permeating management education (Ghoshal, 2005)... The chapter highlights challenges and opportunities in this respect and the critical role of the Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) in helping in this reorientation.

2011 Annual Report and 2012 Outlook
Sharing Information on Progress (SIP) Reports A central commitment of any institution participating in the Principles for Responsible Management Education initiative is to regularly share information with its stakeholders on the progress made in implementing the Principles. Signatories are expected to communicate their progress at least every 24 months*. Yearly communication is encouraged.
* At their meeting in January 2011, the Steering Committee voted to extend the SIP reporting requirement from 18 months to minimum of once every 24 months.

New Policies
Additional PRME Participant Status: “Supporting Organisations” and “Corporate Universities”
The PRME Steering Committee (SC) decided during its first meeting in October 2007 in Chicago to grant PRME Participant status only to academic organisations that are both publicly recognised and degree-granting. As per the meetings in January and June 2011, the SC decided to add a “Supporting Organisation” classification. During the PRME Coordintars conference call on 28 September 2011, the PRME Secretariat, in consultation with the SC, agreed to the following:
I. PRME Signatories: PRME will continue to apply the participation criteria (a) publicly recognised and b) degree-granting) for individual management-related academic organisations (i.e. management/business schools or departments) as per the October 2007 SC recommendation in order to keep the initiative’s focus on curriculum and research change in management/business schools.
II. PRME will add participant category “Supporting Organisation” for membership-based associations and organisations whose work supports the development of responsible managers and/or the work of PRME Signatories, are publicly recognised (i.e. legal/government recognition), and have been in existence for at least two years are invited to apply for PRME Supporting Organisation status.
Upon acceptance to PRME, Supporting Organisations are asked to:
Support PRME Signatories (i.e. business schools and management-related academic institutions, individual faculty, researchers, and/or students affiliated with a PRME Signatory) in implementing the Principles of PRME;
Align their work with PRME values, give visibility to the PRME brand, and conduct at least one activity/project annually in support of PRME;

The Principles for Responsible Management Education
As institutions of higher education involved in the development of current and future managers we declare our willingness to progress in the implementation, within our institution, of the following Principles, starting with those that are more relevant to our capacities and mission. We will report on progress to all our stakeholders and exchange effective practices related to these principles with other academic institutions:
Principle 1
Purpose: We will develop the capabilities of students to be future generators of sustainable value for business and society at large and to work for an inclusive and sustainable global economy.
Principle 2
Values: We will incorporate into our academic activities and curricula the values of global social responsibility as portrayed in international initiatives such as the United Nations Global Compact.
Principle 3
Method: We will create educational frameworks, materials, processes and environments that enable effective learning experiences for responsible leadership.
Principle 4
Research: We will engage in conceptual and empirical research that advances our understanding about the role, dynamics, and impact of corporations in the creation of sustainable social, environmental and economic value.
Principle 5
Partnership: We will interact with managers of business corporations to extend our knowledge of their challenges in meeting social and environmental responsibilities and to explore jointly effective approaches to meeting these challenges.
Principle 6
Dialogue: We will facilitate and support dialogue and debate among educators, students, business, government, consumers, media, civil society organisations and other interested groups and stakeholders on critical issues related to global social responsibility and sustainability.
We understand that our own organisational practices should serve as an example of the values and attitudes we convey to our students.
