PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Term 4 Week 2 Thursday 24 October 2019
Guudji Yiigu everyone (Welcome and Hello in Gathang),
Well we’ve certainly hit the ground running – we have our Art
Show this week, our K – 2 Athletics Carnival and our Boys’ Touch
team are playing in the Hunter Finals on Friday. Schools are such
incredibly busy places but we love it and we wouldn’t have it
any other way.
Whilst all this is happening teachers continue to engage in pro-
fessional learning so that we can keep improving and being the
best that we possibly can for our learners. This week teachers
have taken part in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and ana-
phylaxis training. We also took part in another professional
learning session about Visible Learning. The focus for this work-
shop, led by Mrs O’Donnell, was on ‘Success Criteria’ which
leads on from ‘Learning Intentions’. Success Criteria is a list of
the features that teachers want learners to include in their work
during a lesson or unit of work. It is a way of letting children
know exactly what is expected of them and providing them with
the ability to cross-check and reflect on their own learning and
work, to make sure they are doing what they need to do

correctly. It helps make the desired outcomes of a lesson clearer
and more explicit and supports learners to take responsibility for
their own progress.
I am incredibly excited to see the wonderful masterpieces that our
little artists in 3 – 6 have created for our Art Show. I hope many of
you get the opportunity to come and have a look at our exhibition.
English, Mathematics and subjects like Science and Technology are
vital but the visual arts are every bit as important. Visual arts are
where children can expand their imaginations and develop their cre-
ativity. Through art children get to see the world and all that is in it
through different lenses. Visual arts are also a way for children to
channel feelings and to invoke emotional responses from others. As
the artist, Thomas Merton, said “Art enables us to find ourselves
and lose ourselves at the same time”. An enormous thank you to
our teachers for the work they have been doing with the children
and to Mrs Short and Mrs Hinton for their incredible organisation. I
would also like to give a special thank you to our General Assistant,
Mr Halliburton, for his enormous contribution to preparing for the
show.
Tomorrow, the K-2 students will enjoy a beautiful day filled with
games, activities and running races at the infants athletics carnival. Thank you so much to Miss Biega
for all of her wonderful organisation! We hope that some of you will be able to make it along to watch
and cheer for the K-2 students.
Our Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) and 6H and 6B will commence moving into our amazing new building over
the next few weeks. It truly is a fantastic space. We’ve had technicians over there today imaging some
of the building’s new interactive whiteboards. I cannot wait until the children are in the building, be-
cause it is then that it is going to come to life. We will be organising an opportunity for community
members to have a look through the building over the next few weeks. We will keep you posted.
Finally, I just wanted to share with you a couple of the highlights of my week. The first one is a stu-
dent in Year 2 arriving at the office asking for a meeting with me because he wanted to “Discuss the
new building”. The second is two year 5 students trying to convince me that we need “Three breaks a
day, not just two”. They inform me they are going to find a way of fitting all the learning that has to
take place throughout each day into less time, so they can have that extra break.
Our future leaders…….don’t you love it!!!!!
Enjoy the next few weeks.

COMMUNITY CHARTER
COLLABORATIVE - RESPECTFUL - COMMUNICATION
At Old Bar Public School, we value our dedicated teachers and the amazing work that they do with our
students on a daily basis. The wellbeing of our entire community is paramount, including that of our
teachers.
We also consider ourselves fortunate to have the most wonderful parent body here in Old Bar - we
can never stress how much we value both our students and their families. Our partnership with par-
ents and carers is one of our greatest strengths!
Unfortunately, from time to time, we have had isolated incidents of parents approaching school staff,
volunteers or students in an abusive and inappropriate manner, creating a very distressing and awk-
ward situation for everybody involved.
We greatly value parent feedback - both good and bad! But we also maintain a zero tolerance policy
for abusive behaviour towards staff, volunteers and students at school.
If you have an issue that needs to be addressed, we kindly request that you contact the office and ar-
range a time to discuss it with the class teacher, or one of our executive staff. Please let us know if you
feel that the matter is urgent and we can prioritise it.
We will always strive to engage with concerned parents in a way that is respectful, mutually sup-
portive and with the intention of finding a solution that is in the best interests of our students, their
families and our staff.

Please consider completing the Tell Them From Me parent survey. The survey closes this Friday, so it is your last chance to give your feedback via this forum.
The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on stu-dent well being and engagement. It typically takes 15 minutes or less to complete and is confidential. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.
To access the survey for our school, visit http://nsw.tellthemfromme.com/obps20219
