Staff news
On behalf of the Newcastle High School learning community, I would like to welcome the following staff who
commenced Day One, Term Two:
Mrs Thew English
Ms Netluch Mathematics
Mr Morrissey Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
I would like to congratulate Mrs Shannon Sager and her family on the safe arrival of Amelia Sager who was born on
Friday, 13 April. I would also like to wish Mrs Rebecca Steedman all the best as she enters her maternity leave over
the next couple of weeks.
Staff leading learning
On Monday, 30 April all of the staff from Newcastle High School participated in a day of learning with a focus on
Aboriginal Education. The staff split into two groups, one group went on a cultural tour through Glenrock National
Park and the other group went to Yamuloong Aboriginal Resource Centre in Garden Suburb. Halfway through the
day the groups swapped so all staff had access to both activities.
The day was focused on the Department’s Aboriginal Education Policy, which outlines every school needs to
improve the outcomes of Aboriginal students and equally important, every school needs to educate all
stakeholders on Aboriginal histories and cultures. Our staff development day was aimed at developing a deeper
understanding of Aboriginal histories and cultures for all our staff so that the policy is implemented effectively
across the school. Feedback from staff was extremely positive with some staff outlining it as the best professional
learning they have participated in and it really opened their eyes up to the amount of knowledge and history that
is on our doorstep in Newcastle.

Exhibitions of learning
On Thursday, 10 May we will be having our first joint exhibitions of learning with Year 7 Passion Projects and Year 9
Mathematics students showcasing their learning. The exhibition has been incorporated as part of the assessment
process so students can stand next to their work and talk about what they have learnt, what they have been able to
produce and what learning will come next. I would like to encourage families and friends to attend the exhibitions
and contribute to the feedback that the students will receive in regards to their learning.
Exhibitions are becoming increasingly popular amongst education settings as they require students to display many
of the soft skills the research tells us are extremely important for future focused learners.
Email details
Based on feedback from parents we are starting to increase the use of email as a communication tool with parents.
All invoices will now be sent via email and we will be sending year specific information out via email at time of need
also, so it is really important we have the correct details on file. If you have not received an email from the school
this year can you please contact the school office so that we can update your details or contact the school via email
at newcastle-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au
Uniform
With the cold weather about to hit we have been reminding students about the appropriate winter uniform, in
particular jumpers. The school’s uniform policy and process can be found on the school’s website and I encourage
all families to be familiar with our uniform policy.
Thank you,
Nathan Towney

The Staff
As always in PDHPE, we have hit the ground running in 2018! Some
familiar faces have joined us as full time members of the faculty
this year.
Mrs Rebecca Steedman has enjoyed a long relationship with NHS
having filled a range of different teaching roles within the school.
She has been a teacher in our Support Unit, coordinator of the Girls
Program and most recently, a member of staff at our Cooks Hill
Campus. We are now lucky enough to have her ‘back where she
belongs’ as a PDHPE teacher.
Mrs Steedman has wasted no time in getting back into the swing of things in PDHPE. In addition to her day to day
teaching responsibilities, she has taken on the huge role of CHS and Knockout Sports coordinator and facilitated
the participation of our talented students in a range of sporting opportunities. Her organisation and management
of our school’s knockout teams has been amazing and we have appreciated all of her efforts in this area.
Mrs Steedman is expecting her first child in June and although we will miss her valuable contribution to our
faculty, we wish her well as she commences her maternity leave early in Term 2. Mrs Jodie Coutts will be
replacing Mrs Steedman for the remainder of the year. We look forward to welcoming her into our faculty.
Mr Matthew Erich also re-joined the PDHPE staff this year having spent a number of terms in 2017 at
Merewether High School. Mr Erich was able to seamlessly fit back in to the Newey High way of life and has been
an asset to our faculty. Mr Erich recently learnt of his permanent appointment as a PDHPE teacher at Glendale
High School, commencing in Term 2. We wish him the best of luck and hope that he enjoys his new school. Mr
Erich will be replaced by Mr Dean Morrissey. We look forward to welcoming Mr Morrissey to our faculty at the
beginning of the term.
The other members of our faculty in 2018 are Mr Peter See, Mr Joel McCafferty, and Mrs Alison Dennis.
Mr See is ‘part of the furniture’ here at Newcastle High School. He teaches Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation in
Years 11 and 12, as well as teaching PDHPE to students from Year 7 through to Year 10. Mr See can always be
relied upon for a piece of sporting trivia and he is a Cronulla Sharks supporter through and through (but don’t
hold that against him!).
We have been fortunate in retaining Mr McCafferty on a full time teaching load this year. Mr McCafferty was
with us in 2017 and immediately became an active and valuable member of our staff. In addition to his excellent
teaching skills, Mr McCafferty has a wealth of knowledge and experience in coaching Rugby League. Both Mr
McCafferty and Mr See are very popular in the staff room when League try outs and practise sessions are
scheduled! Mr McCafferty also teaches the Year 11 Preliminary course as well as practical and theory PDHPE to
students from Years 7 through to 10.
Mrs Dennis is relieving as Head Teacher this year in the absence of Mrs Nicole Blatchford who is on leave until
2019. Mrs Dennis teaches our HSC PDHPE class, along with practical and theory PDHPE in Years 7 through to 10.

What will we get up to in 2018?
PDHPE is a mandatory subject and as such, we follow an approved syllabus and course of study. The core subject is
divided into a practical and a theory component. Students have two practical lessons and one theory lesson over
the two week timetable cycle.
The following table outlines our practical program for 2018:

DANCE Unit 2018
One of the most successful and engaging units of the year. We are looking forward to the 2018 Dance Unit and we
are hopeful of another success!
The theory component of the course covers a wide range of personal development topics. Students learn about a
number of relevant and important areas of health through a variety of teaching and learning strategies.
Our theory program for 2018 is set out in the following table:

ELECTIVES in PDHPE
In addition to the mandatory PDHPE syllabus our faculty offers a number of elective subjects for students
who have a special interest or passion for all things related to health and physical activity.
YEAR 8
In Year 8, students have the opportunity to select a semester elective. This year we have offered Human
Movement in semester one and Analysing Sport in semester two.
YEAR 9 PASS
We have two Year 9 Physical Activity and Sport classes this year. Mrs Dennis and Mr McCafferty are their
teachers. PASS covers a range of topics including the Body in Action, Moving with Skill, Opportunities and
Pathways in Physical activity and Sport and Coaching. We are looking forward to our excursion to the Raw
Challenge obstacle course later in the year.
YEAR 10 PASS
We also have two Year 10 PASS classes currently taught by Mrs Steedman and Mr Erich. Students have
been extremely busy this term looking at the topic ‘Australia’s Sporting Identity’ which investigates
significant achievements Australians have made in sport and how these may have shaped our country’s
identity. Throughout the term students also explored a number of different physical activities that broad-
ened their knowledge and understanding, as well as regular sports such as netball, rugby league and soc-
cer. Next term both classes will begin to explore the topic ‘Technology in Sport’ and how it enhances and
improves performance.
A massive thank you goes to the staff at Ninja Climb for facilitating a fantastic excursion for our classes.
All students had a great time and challenged themselves with climbing skill and working at height.
Congratulations to Noah Castle who is the Year 10 PASS climbing champion, with the fastest time on the
challenge wall. It was fantastic to see students stepping outside of their comfort zone, trying new
activities and supporting each other through many challenges. At the end of our time students were also
able to challenge themselves in the Ninja Parc. Maybe we might see Australia’s next Ninja Warrior from
this group?

Knockout and CHS Sport
The beginning of 2018 was a busy time for Knock-
out sport and CHS nominations and trials.
We have already had over one hundred and fifty
students represent Newcastle High School in sports
such as:
Soccer, Hockey, Netball, Basketball, Tennis, AFL,
Touch Football, Water Polo, Triathlon, Rugby Union,
Rugby League, Cricket, Swimming, Diving, Table
Tennis, Squash and Rowing just to name a few!
There are still plenty of opportunities available as
the year progresses for students to participate in
representative teams and individual events.
Check our Facebook page and school website for updates, or come down to the PDHPE staffroom to enquire about
your chosen sport.
CARNIVALS
We kicked off the year with two hugely successful swimming carnivals. The first carnival was specifically for
competitive swimmers who were trialling for our Zone Swimming team. From this carnival we had approximately
60 students qualify for zone. Since then, we have had a number of students who have continued representation
through to the CHS carnival. Those students were:
Jade Archer, Cooper Blumel, Lachlan Brown, Charlotte Clack, Georgia Fleming, Maya Gippel, Guy Hetherington,
Patrick Johansen, Averil Jones, Sylvia Knott, Emily March, Erin Pettit and Heidi Schneider
Our Under 14’s girls relay team ( Emily, Averil, Maya and Heidi) swam extremely well and came second at the CHS
swimming carnival and have now qualified for the State team to compete at NSW All Schools in May.
Averil and Emily have also qualified in individual events. We wish our girls the best of luck. They will undoubtedly
do the school and themselves proud.
Our second carnival was a novelty carnival that offered all students the opportunity to participate, regardless of
swimming ability. The weather was perfect and every student had plenty of opportunities to get wet and engage in
some fun and frivolity in the water.
Plenty of House points were up for grabs by entering each event and also for gaining a top four place in the event.
Swimming or moving ‘across the pool’ was the flavour of the day and activities involved - wading, hands on heads,
dog paddle, kick boards and freestyle.
The Staff vs Year 12 ‘across the pool’ relay was a highlight and it was difficult to determine the winner as bodies
were flying in and out at such a rate that we decided to call it a tie!
Carnivals to look forward to …

Under 15s Boys Rugby League 8’s The Under 15s Boys Rugby League 8’s team travelled to Wallsend to compete in the Callaghan Cup.
After winning their first three games, the boys advanced to the quarter finals where they met Dungog HS. A gutsy
performance and a win by 4 points saw the young Newcastle High team go through to the Semi Finals. They were
up against a tough side in Callaghan College Wallsend. Having conceded the first try the boys managed to fight back
and be all square with the opposition. In the final seconds Newcastle High had one last chance to take the win but
couldn't cross the line. Unfortunately due to a count back and not scoring the first try, this is where the boys’ day
ended.
Well done to all involved and their efforts.

Reflections Holiday Parks High School
Team Challenge
On Thursday 15th and Friday 16th of February Newcastle
High School placed three teams in the Reflections Holiday
Parks High School Team Challenge surfing event. The
contest is part of Surfest’s festival of surfing, which is the
largest surfing event in the southern hemisphere. There
were 42 teams competing in the boys division, including a
team from Vanuatu. We were unable to enter a girls team
due to lack of numbers (hopefully next year)
The first day of competition saw great surfing
conditions with sunny skies and a rising swell. Our
teams performed extremely well and received
some creditable scores. The contest format
requires a team of three surfers to catch a scoring
wave within a given time. Only one surfer from
each team can be in the water at any one time and
bonus points are awarded if they finish before the
end of the heat. Each team surfs twice and their
scores are accumulated, with the top eight moving
through to the semi-finals.
Conditions on day two were fun and clean with
plenty of good surfing on offer. Our number
one team managed to scrape into the
semi-finals by less than a point, while our other
teams, unfortunately, bowed out. The boys
performed exceptionally in the semi-final,
winning it and taking out more fancied rivals
Narrabeen Sports High and TLSC Entrance
Campus.

In the final, Newcastle High performed valiantly, but were
unable to get the better waves and went down to some
quality teams. Our competitors were a credit to the school
in the exemplary way in which they conducted themselves,
interacted with surfers and teachers from other schools
and supported and cheered each other on.
Congratulations to all our team members for putting on
such a tremendous performance and accomplishing such
an amazing result! Our best in a number of years. You
should all be exceedingly proud of your achievements.
This contest is a great event, that promotes a
healthy lifestyle and we thank Warren Smith and
Reflections Holiday Parks for organising and giving
our students the opportunity to compete against
some of the best junior surfers in the state. We look
forward to competing again next year.

During the last week of Term Four 2017, Newcastle High School gave students the opportunity to participate in
Hunter Surf Life Saving’s Surf Survival Course. We had 15 students attend the course which was conducted over two
days. The first day was held at school, where students learnt how to identify beach and surf hazards, basic first aid,
CPR training, surfing etiquette and how to respond in emergency situations.
The weather and surf conditions were
ideal on the second day where the
previous day’s theory was put into
practise. At both Newcastle Baths and
Nobbys Beach our students were
required to perform a series of
practical tasks, including an ocean
swim, board rescue techniques,
swimming 150m non-stop and how to
remain afloat for an extended period
of time.
Congratulations to all students
involved, as they were fantastic
ambassadors for our school. They had
a great time and more importantly,
are now more knowledgeable in the risks and dangers that can be experienced when in or near the ocean. The skills
these students learnt may one day save their own or someone else’s life. Students who successfully completed the
course are eligible to participate in school surfing events.

On Wednesday Week 11, Term 1 during lunch, Newcastle High Rebels rugby players received a visit from NSW
Rugby Development officer, Michael Howell. We were fortunate Michael only come to train us, because at 6'5 and
115kgs, he would have taken a fair amount of feeding if he'd actually stayed for lunch. Rebel's legends were taken
through a series of contact and safety drills by the Country Cockatoo's second rower and everyone got something
out of the session including a couple green ant bites. Thanks Michael!

At the end of Term 1, the Year 7 Japanese and French students
completed their cultural assignments. In Japanese there were some
amazing presentations, including one on Japanese odori (dance) by
Makayla Swan, on origami (paper folding) by Chelsea Rees, and on
washi (hand-made paper) by Hunter McGregor. On the last day of
term, the students made a sakura (cherry blossom) tree for our
classrooms and had a hanami (flower viewing party) – just like they
would in Japan!
In French, Year 7 were assigned a task to plan an itinerary for a 5 day
trip to Paris, involving visits to landmarks of their choice, costings,
transport etc. Students were able to choose from presenting a blog,
a travel brochure, scrapbook, or an audiovisual presentation. The
standard of the tasks from our Year 7 French students has been
outstanding. Many students dedicated a substantial amount of effort
and time to complete tasks to such a high standard. Some students
also utilized the Learning Hub to complete their task. Thank you Year
7 for your amazing work! So proud of you all!
Term 1 had lots of opportunities for the students to show just how
much they had learned about French and Japanese culture and it was
a great way to finish the term.
