INTRODUCTION Some students have trouble discriminating between vowels and consonants as well as lower case and upper case (capital) letters. These activities and games were created to make the process both fun and memorable.
Below are all the letters of the alphabet. The vowels are outlined and the consonants are black. Notice that there is one letter that is grey. It is grey because the letter “y” can be either a vowel or a consonant.
a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y
z
Here are just the vowels
a e i o u and sometimes y Write all the letters in black ink on index cards or print out the letters at the end of the document and see if the student can discriminate between vowels and consonants as well as capital and lower case letters. If they have difficulties, write the vowels in red, the consonants in blue and “y” in purple. Have them say the letters aloud so you know they are reading the letters and not simply looking at the color. Once they have success, see if they can discriminate between the vowels and consonants using black letters. You can do the same activity with upper and lower case letters. Try the activities on the following pages to strengthen abilities, and be sure to read the directions aloud.

TRACKING, VISUAL DSCRIMINATION, AND PROCESSING SPEED See how quickly you can find and draw a slash through the seven consonants in each line. Always search from left to right. Use a timer to measure speed and record the time on the blank next to each line. See if you can improve your speed. TIOUEAWIOUUEDIOUEACIOULIOUEMNO ___
