At fust glance, Prelude To A Kiss appears to be a modem day fairy tale. The princess meets the prince, they fall in love, battle the dark forces that try to keep them apart, and finally the prince fends off those dark forces and :arries the princess off into the sunset, happily ever after. Clearly, we are never too old to be told, and to enjoy a good and compelling story, and Prelude is no exception. I have previously directed two of Craig Luca' s other plays, Blue Window and &u:kless, and
because I have become intimate with the recurring themes in those works, I am also aware that Prelude resonates with still another , and perhaps a more powerful element then the more obvious "Frog Prince" fairy tale.
In his two earlier works the themes of estrangement, (Can anyone ever really know another person's pain and history?) of alienation, {Are we ultimately alone in this life?) and of fear of what we cannot control in this helter skelter world and society (AIDS, cancer, random violence) are certainly more pronounced and more obvious. Nevertheless, these themes, although they are more subtle, are still clearly
i.mbedded in the fabric of this play.
In fact , Prelude can not only be viewed as a modem day fairy tale, but also as a
modem day nightmare, one from which the sleepers may never awake. It is the
nightmare of AIDS, the plague or dark force of this modem society, for which, so far, there is no forgiveness, no rebirth. And maybe the prelude to the kiss was really the romance of this new age of sexual awakening and sexual freedom, and maybe what followed that blush of freedom, of self love, of sexual awakening, is the dark cloud of AIDS and sexuallv transmitted disease that looms over us all in
this era of the 90's. An era in which young people transform into dying old men, in minutes, before their lovers eyes, where humanity must reach down into its soul to rediscover a compassion and a love that transcends the physical, where a
moment 's indiscretion will color and snuff out a life.
But all is not lost, even in this nightmare, the lovers do wake up and there is a
happy ending. Even in this dark time, there is compassion and humanity; there is
hope.
