Preceptorship for Newly Registered Nurses, K. Sharples,K. Elcock. Learning Matters Limited, Exeter (2011)., ISBN: 9780 85725373 6
I am sure we all remember those nervous moments when wewalked onto the ward, no longer the student, but now the fullyfledged Registered Nurse. The lapels may no longer sit on theshoulder but the transition from student to staff nurse is just asdaunting. In this book Sharples and Elcock provide seventeenchapters full of theoretical guidance and practical advice whichwill help steer newly registered nurses thorough the initial precep-torship period. Although the content will be familiar, as it builds onpre-registration programme syllabus, each chapter aims have beenmapped to the Preceptorship and Knowledge and Skills Frame-works. This will help practitioners make links to their formalpreceptorship programme.
Activities throughout the book link theory to practice byapplying the theory in context of an activity which will be relevant

in clinical areas. Several case studies offer reflective narratives orpresent challenges which may be faced by newly qualified band 5nurses. These provide practical advice and could be also be usedas discussion points with the nurse preceptor. The authors haveprovided extensive up to date references at the end of each chapterand at the end of the book. Relevant websites also provide links tocurrent legislative content and the NHS flyingstart site. However, these are English links and practitioners from other countrieswhere health is devolved should be careful to follow their owncountry’s programme. Overall this is a useful book to add to anynewly registered nurses booklist and importantly it is offered ina number of electronic formats as well as print.
