There are five time prophecies in Daniel. References to some of them are found in

Revelation.

10

These prophecies are:

70 weeks--Daniel 9:24

2300 days--Daniel 8:14

1260 days--Daniel 7:25 (a time and times and the dividing of time)

1290 days--Daniel 12:11

1335 days--Daniel 12:12

William Miller struggled with the meaning of Daniel 8:14.

11

Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed. (Daniel 8:14)

12

He decided that . . .

the text revealed the time of the second coming because he thought that the earth was the sanctuary to be cleansed and that this would occur when Jesus returns and the earth is destroyed by fire.

13

What errors can you find in his reasoning?

14

Nowhere in the Bible is the earth a symbol of the sanctuary.

The earth is not destroyed by fire at the second coming of Christ.

15

But Miller was correct in connecting the prophecies

of Daniel 8 and 9.

16

In Daniel 8 we find the record of Daniel’s vision (chazown) of a ram,

of a he goat, and of a little horn that came from the he goat. This horn became exceedingly great

and cast down the sanctuary and truth.

17

I saw that God had not changed the Sabbath, for He never changes. But the pope had changed it

from the seventh to the first day of the wee; for he was to change times and laws. (Early Writings, p.

32)

18

Then Daniel heard someone ask how long this vision would be, and the answer was two

thousand and three hundred days. Daniel did not understand, so Gabriel came and explained who the ram and the he goat were and that a king of fierce countenance would stand up who would destroy the mighty and holy people and who

would also stand up against the Prince of princes.

This caused Daniel to faint. Then he rose up and went about the king’s business but was astonished and still did not understand!

19

Every use of the word vision in Daniel 8 is chazown until verse 15, where the word mareh is introduced.

Chazown is the entire vision he saw (of the ram, he goat, little horn waxing great, etc.); mareh is a

particular part of the vision that he did not understand--the part about the evening and morning or

the prophecy about time. Gabriel returned in Daniel 9:23 to explain it.

20

Chazown in Daniel in 8-11:

a vision appeared unto me (8:1)

in a vision (8:2)

the vision concerning the daily sacrifice (8:13)

had seen the vision (8:15)

at the time of the end shall be the vision (8:17)

shut up the vision for it shall be for many days (8:26)

whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning (9:21)

to seal up the vision (9:24)

the vision is for many days (10:14)

to establish the vision (11:14)

21

Mareh of Daniel 8, 9, 10

the appearance of a man (8:15)

understand the vision (8:16)

the vision of the evening and morning (8:26)

astonished at the vision (8:27)

consider the vision (9:23)

had understanding of the vision (10:1)

appearance of lightning (10:6)

appearance of a man (10:18)
