1- Current COVID-19 situation

Elias Conde

Situation in Norway:

• Cases are very low. Currently 24 patients at the hospitals in Norway and only 3 in the respirator.

• Number of Deaths in Norway in total: 238.

• University open for local students from August.

• For international students it will open from January*.

• We are closely monitoring all the information regarding the COVID-19 situation.

Travel restrictions

• The government has closed the borders to foreign nationals who lack a residence or work permit in Norway and as a general rule, this will apply until 20 August. Foreigners will be turned away at the border under provisions of a Norwegian law relating to the control of communicable diseases.

• Before 20 July, the government will decide if travellers from other nearby countries can visit Norway at all this summer.

Semester Start 2020

• Online:

• The majority of the programmes will be offered online for the 1st semester.

Deferment (Iran*): Only possible in 2 scenarios:

1. For students admitted to study programmesthat do not offer a digital fall semester 2020. We will contact all the affected students with more information during the summer.

2. Iranian* students who are not able to transfer the deposit due to the sanctions before 1 August.

2- Visa/Study permit

Deposit - digital fall semester

• New deadline: 1 August

• If you want to attend the fall semester online you need to transfer the deposit (121 220 NOK) before 1 August. If not – you lose your study place

• Students from Iran who cannot transfer the deposit can reserve the study place until next year

• You will not have access to the deposit until after you have arrived in Norway

Deposit reimbursement

• If your study programme does not offer a digital fall semester and you want to reserve your study place to next year you have two options:

• Get the deposit reimbursed (send email to admissions@uis.no)

• Leave the money in the UiS deposit account until next year

• No fee for transferring the money back

• Currency exchange might have changed

• It might take up to two weeks before the money is in your account again

Study permit application

• Study Permit applications continue to be accepted in select locations. Check your country!

• If you have not applied yet, UDI recommends that you apply in October with arrival date in early January

• Not necessary to get a room first – use the email confirmation you received when you applied for housing

• Family visa – remember to check the requirements with UDI before applying

Timeline

• 1 August – deadline for transferring deposit to UiS

• 1 September – deadline for paying the semester fee of 740 NOK

• October – start applying for the study permit (www.udi.no)

• Early January – arrival in Stavanger

3- Accommodation

If you are not coming to Stavanger this August,

Housing application• Just keep your housing application as it is.

• More information about housing application for the second semester in August

Cancellation of contract

• Cancellation before 23 July – no cost• Cancellation after 24 July - need to pay 2 months

rent

• If you need to cancel your housing contract, please email to SiS Housing ASAP, no later than 23 July <sis@studentensbeste.no>

If you are coming to Stavanger this August,

Housing application

• SiS Housing (SiS Bolig) sends contract in June• Need to sign within 7 days

• Contract duration is from 1 August 2020 to 30 June 2021• Possible to change/cancel after the first semester• You will receive only one offer. If you reject it, you have to

make your own arrangement.

• There are no family/couple flats available to international students.

• If your housing application is “under consideration”, you just need to wait.

How to pay rent

• You will receive the housing bill in your account in Boligtorget

• You can pay your first rent after your arrival

• Possible to pay online or via the bank terminal at the reception of SiS Housing at Kitty Kielland’sbuilding on Ullandhaug campus

4- Other practical information

Registration with IT

• You will receive an e-mail in August when your account can be activated. (Check spam folder!)

• New IT-user

• Username and Password

• Through your account, you can access Canvas (online learning platform), e-mail, wi-fi, student computers and StudentWeb.

If you have problems creating your IT-account, please wait until semester start to speak directly to the IT-department for help.

Student registration, timetables

• All students must register and verify their education plan each semester.

• Log in to Studentweb with your IT-user account to register.

• For the autumn semester the deadline for registration is September 1 and for the spring semester the deadline is February 1.

• NB! If you fail to register within the deadline, you will lose your study rights at UiS.

• You can access your timetable from: http://student.uis.no/student-life/timetables/

Semester fee

• All students must pay the semester fee each semester within the deadline: September 1(autumn semester) and February 1 (spring semester).

• In Studentweb, go to 'Payments' to create an invoice for the semester fee.

• NB! If you fail to pay the semester fee within the deadline, you will lose your study rights at UiS.

Health & travel insurance

Students from EU/EEA-countries:• Remember to apply for a free European Health

Insurance card before arriving to Norway and bring it with you

• An EHIC gives you the right to access state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in Norway

Students from non-EU/EEA countries:• We would recommend having a travel and/or

health insurance before arrival, as the medical treatment expenses will be very high if you get sick before getting the ID-number (Norwegian identification number)

Original documentation

• We will be checking your original bachelor’s degree transcript and diploma upon arrival

• Remember to bring the original documents with you!

• You will receive e-mail including the verification schedule in January

• Students failing to present the documentation may lose their study right
