This lesson can be used prior to visiting the exhibit as a way to familiarize students with the actual artwork they will see in the exhibit. I have always enjoyed watching students see the original work of art that they have previously only seen an image of. In the museum, they make an instant connection with the work and are always amazed at how the size, detail, or color of the original verses the one they saw in a book or PowerPoint.
If a trip to the exhibit is not possible, this lesson provides an excellent introduction to the Feldman Process of Art Criticism. For students who have not had any practice with the process, the lesson is a great introduction to critiquing art. Although the PowerPoint is mostly teacher centered, there is room in the presentation for student participation.
For students who have had practice in the Feldman Process of Art Criticism, the PowerPoint provides an excellent review using 3 artist with varying media, but similar subject matter.
IMPORTANT: The ‘answers’ provided in the notes section of the PowerPoint is a guide for the teachers reference only. There may be many other correct answers formulated during the course of the PowerPoint by both the teacher and the students.
