TRANSCRIPT
Monday, 13 July 2020
31st May 2020Astronauts were launched
into space from US soil for
the first time in 9 years.
This took place at Cape
Canaveral, Florida.
NASA worked with the
private company, SpaceX,
to design and launch a
new rocket system that is
more efficient and
reusable.
BBC coverage of the launch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI3fiNkgTOU
Key Question: Where
would you go if you
could go into Space?
Literacy Task
• Describe your ideal mission into Space.
• Where would you go?
• What would you do/want to find out?
• Some keywords below to help with your
description:
mission discover atmosphere spacewalk international
station asteroid investigate system
Use the NASA website https://www.nasa.gov/kidsclub/index.html if you need some inspiration
Key Question: What
would your mission
patch look like?
Art Task
• Your task is to create a mission patch for
your ideal mission that you described
earlier.
• The following slides show 20 different
patches that astronauts have designed for
past missions to give you some ideas.
This is the patch for
STS-45.
Charlie Bolden, Mission
Commander will now
help you create your
own mission patch.
Key Question: What
events have occurred
in the history of human
spaceflight and when?
Numeracy Task
• Along with this presentation there should be
some date cards.
• Your task is to create a timeline.
• Put the decades in order and then, using
information from the following website, add
at least one event for each decade.
spaceflight.html
• A downloaded version of this site is also available.

Key Question: What are
the issues surrounding
spaceflight?
Science Activity
• What are the forces involved during a rocket launch? What
problems do scientists need to overcome?
• Use https://www.spacex.com to look at some of the tests that they have had to carry out before getting to the launch on Saturday.
• The astronauts reach a maximum speed of 27,010 km/h –
what is this in mph? What would happen is you crashed at
this speed?
• What was the force of gravity (how many g) that the
astronauts experienced during the launch as reported in the
BBC coverage?
• Where might you feel this type of g force on Earth (think theme
park)?
Activity 1
Create a straw rocket -these may be familiar to you.
However I want you to consider and find out:
• What do scientists use to launch rockets?
• What effect do the fins have on your rocket?
• What would happen if you changed the shape of the fins?
Activity 2
This is a challenge for you (and possibly your family).
Along with this presentation there should be a Shuttle glider document with the full template and challenges on.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make up the model and attempt the challenges –take a picture of your completed model and share with us!
