Welcome
Thank you for your interest in Harare Theological College (HTC). We exist first
and foremost to glorify God and promote the gospel of Jesus Christ in the
power of the Holy Spirit. Because the church is central to what God is
accomplishing in the world, we at HTC want to strengthen the church by
offering programmes designed to train pastors, evangelists, Christian workers
and lay leaders for ministry whether in Zimbabwe or in other nations.
At HTC, we have chosen to configure our course offerings in such a manner
that those who are already in ministry and those who are engaged in other
employment may still be able to gain knowledge and critical skills for effective
ministry. This means that we offer most of our courses in the evenings when
people are less busy and have the time to attend lectures. We are an
intentionally non-residential college because we want all of our students to live
and continue in ministry among the people of their community while studying.
At HTC, we offer various programmes all the way up to a diploma level. We
also facilitate a degree in theology through our partnership with the South
African Theological Seminary (SATS). For students who are busy and would
like to experience theological education before committing full-time, we also
offer a programme called the Foundational Certificate in Biblical Studies which
can be completed within just one year.
Please do come and visit us here at HTC. You will see that we have excellent
facilities for our students including a 20,000+ volume library, a modern
computer lab, and comfortable classrooms equipped with multimedia teaching
aids. We also have a diverse, multi-racial, multi-cultural, evangelical faculty
who have many years of teaching and ministry experience. HTC chose to
locate itself not far from the city centre so as to be accessible to commuting
students throughout the greater Harare metropolitan area. Come and pay us a
visit!

History of the College
The long history of HTC training church leaders began in the Zambezi Valley in
1953 as part of the missionary efforts of The Evangelical Alliance Mission
(TEAM) at Mavhuradonha. Later the training of leaders moved to Kapfundi
where the programme developed by adding a three-year English course for
post-Standard VI applicants. The Light of Life Correspondence School became
an extension of the college and continued until 1986.
The college became co-educational in 1965, and in 1969 a three-year
theological course was added. The college was relocated to Chinhoyi in 1969
where it became a significant training institution known as the Evangelical Bible
College (EBC). The Evening Extension School was added in 1970, which
eventually grew into a full Theological Education by Extension department
(TEE). The TEE department was separated from the residential programmes in
1991 and became an independent entity distinct from the college. The
Certificate in Theology, a three-year secondary level programme, was initiated
in 1987 along with a post-secondary level three-year Diploma in Theology
Programme. Because of the college’s desire to be as available as possible to
the growing Christian community in Zimbabwe, the Evangelical Bible College
relocated into Hatfield, Harare, in April 1991, under the name of Harare
Theological College (HTC).
In October 2004, HTC moved to a new campus at 10 Aberdeen Road,
Avondale, a short distance from the city centre, making it more accessible to
those wishing to use HTC’s resources. Harare Theological College is an
independent, interracial, and interdenominational college and reflects this in its
selection of students, faculty, staff, and Board of Governors.

In order for HTC to achieve its purpose, the following objectives have been
developed:

Church and the world.
4. To develop skills essential for an effective ministry.

6. To develop a zeal for communicating the Word of God to others.
Academic objectives:
1. To encourage a rigorous knowledge of the Bible
2. To provide the skills of personal Bible study
3. To teach and apply the art and science of hermeneutics
4. To develop an understanding of systematic and biblical theology
5. To apply a thoroughly biblical worldview
6. To address contemporary theological issues and evaluate them
7. To demonstrate how to define, justify, and defend the Christian faith
8. To provide a knowledge of the historical development of theology and the

9. To develop a principled approach to pastoral, educational, and outreach

2. To support para-church ministries and strengthen local churches
3. To encourage Bible teaching in local schools and in government-related
ministries
4. To help Christians in society become more effective at being salt and light

3
Statement of Faith
The college states its belief in the following essential matters of faith:
1. The Holy Scriptures, as originally given by God, are the infallible,
supreme and final authority in testing all claims about what is true and
what is right. In matters not addressed by the Bible, what is true and right
is assessed by criteria consistent with the teachings of Scripture.
2. One God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
3. Our Lord Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, his virgin birth, his
sinless human life, his divine miracles, his vicarious and atoning death,
his bodily resurrection, his ascension, his present mediation on our behalf,
and his personal return in power and glory.
4. The Salvation of lost and sinful people through the shed blood of the Lord
Jesus Christ by faith alone, and regeneration by the Holy Spirit.
5. The Holy Spirit who indwells the believer enables him/her to live a holy
life, to witness and work for the Lord Jesus Christ.
6. The Spiritual Unity of all those who, having believed in Jesus Christ for
their salvation, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit and compose,
therefore, the church, the body of Christ, of which he is the head.
7. The Bodily Resurrection of all the dead; of believers unto everlasting life
in heaven and of unbelievers unto everlasting torment in hell.

Philosophy of Education
At HTC our ambition in theological education is to equip students to think and
live theologically. Fundamentally, this means that we want to produce students
who love and fear the word of God above everything else. At HTC, we affirm
that the Bible is to be received as the authoritative word of God, and as the
supreme written norm by which God binds the conscience, and that the
authority of the church is subordinate to that of Scripture.
Although our faculty is denominationally diverse, we all stand on the word of
God as the final arbiter of truth in this universe. We maintain our doctrinal
differences in charity as we continue to help each other see what God has
really said in his word. God has ordained that we study his word in community,
as the church - that together we can see more than if we tried to understand his
word on our own. In practice this means that our students will be exposed to
various theological frameworks and views thereby compelling them to study the
Bible for themselves, and rest ultimately – not on the word of man – but on the
word of God.
Diversity can be a cause for division, but at HTC we view it as our strength.
God has made each of us different, and given us different capacities and gifts.
Together we are greater than apart.

ProgrammesAt HTC we offer a number of programmes designed to suit a variety of needs in
the church community. All of our main programmes are offered in the evenings
from 4pm to 8pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. We realise that very

We offer the following programmes at HTC:
Foundational Certificate in Biblical Studies (5 courses)
Foundational Certificate in Biblical Languages (4 courses)
Foundational Certificate in Ministry (5 courses)

system. This means that hard-working students can complete a Diploma in
Theology in just 3 years, by committing themselves to 2 or 3 evenings in the
week.
The following grade scale applies at HTC:
A – 80-100% (Excellent Work)
B – 70-79% (Very Good Work)
