� He was born in Venice

�  Italian painter of landscapes (Vedute) in Venice

� He was also a printmaker in etching

� Oil on canvas

Often helped his father with his work

Including assisting with painting scenes in 1720 for an opera by Scarlatti

Canaletto Characteristics

�  One of the pioneers of two-point linear perspective

�  Marked by accuracy for detail

�  Executed with precision, and luminosity

�  Canaletto preferred to work outside, in direct view of his subject

�  Topographical painting

�  Canaletto’s paintings were the postcards of 18C
