1. Description
COM600, the station automation device of ABB, is an all-in-one communication gateway, automation platform and user interface solu-tion for utility and industrial distribution sub-stations. The gateway functionality provides seamless connectivity between substation IEDs and network-level control and manage-ment systems. The automation platform with its logic processor makes COM600 a flexible implementation platform for substation-level automation tasks. As a user interface solu-tion COM600 accommodates web technol-ogy based functionalities providing access to substation devices and processes via a web browser based human machine interface (HMI).
The COM600 design process has been guided by the IEC 61850 standard for com-munication and interoperability of substa-tion equipment. The communication gateway functionality of COM600 supports a variety
of commonly used communication protocols of substation devices. For even greater con-nectivity, OPC data access and OPC alarms and events are supported to enable informa-tion sharing and control with, for example, a distributed control system (DCS).
The IEC 61131-3 based logic processor can be programmed to execute automatic sequences directly via communications media. Further, the logic processor enables the creation of both simple control programs and more so-phisticated applications like load shedding or fault isolation and network restoration.
The COM600 hardware platform is based on ruggedized mechanics with no moving parts subject to wear and tear. Thus, the compact and robust design is well adapted for harsh environments. The preinstalled software and the off-line configuration performed on a separate computer contribute to a faster project execution.

2. Application
COM600 provides gateway functions for map-ping signals between protection and control IEDs in industrial or utility substations and higher-level systems. It further includes an optional HMI that provides data and informa-tion from the substation to the users.
COM600 gathers data from protection and control IEDs and from process devices us-ing different communication protocols. The supported protocols can be combined freely in one station computer, limited only by the number of hardware interfaces and the license. COM600 uses web technology to dis-play data to different users in a professional and user-friendly manner. The optional slave protocols enable the transfer of information to a network control centre (NCC) or distrib-uted control system (DCS).
COM600 benefits from the potential of the IEC 61850 standard by using the IEC 61850-
6 substation configuration language (SCL) and IEC 61850 -7 communications modeling regardless of protocol used. As the IEC 61850 data modeling is used for all communication protocols the gateway cross-reference is done in the same way regardless of the protocol, for example IEC 61850-8-1 or DNP3.
COM600 can by using the optional web HMI (requires Mozilla Firefox®, Opera or Microsoft Internet Explorer with Adobe SVG viewer 3.03) be used for efficient substation visu-alization, monitoring and control. Measured values from process devices are displayed on the HMI. Single-line diagrams can be used to view any available measured values from the process devices.
All primary single-line diagram (SLD) devices are displayed in one screen. The SLD recog-nizes different voltage levels and different busbar systems such as single busbar, double busbar and duplex systems. The four-mode busbar coloring visualizes the busbar status. The coloring of the busbar is user configura-ble.

The single line diagram can be configured to include an indication for the local/remote selection switch. Alarm symbols and generic symbols can be places in the SLD to give an even better overview of the status. In addi-tion, generic control buttons can be added to control objects. A separate control dialog is used for controlling the switching device. It provides information on switching device identification, reservation status and inter-locking conditions. The select-before-execute logic is used to prevent unintended opera-tion. By reserving the switching device for a single user the risk of controlling the device from two different locations is eliminated. Further, COM600 supports the tap changer function.
Connection examples: COM600 has by default four serial ports. The number of serial ports can be increased using the optional serial card. The four serial ports enable the connection and combination of different serial protocols. For example 3 SPA
+ 1 IEC 101 protocol or 2 SPA + 1 IEC 103 +1 IEC 101 protocol.
COM600 can as an option be equipped with a LON-card enabling the connection of one plastic or glass LON interface. Alternatively the number of Ethernet interfaces can be increased by choosing the optional Ethernet extension card.
3. Parameter setting
The parameter setting tool (PST) is used for viewing and/or setting parameters in IEDs supporting transparent SPA, Modbus or IEC 61850 parameterization. The PST enables activation of the parameter setting function for the chosen IEDs. In addition, it enables that only selected parameters are shown in the web HMI of COM600 limiting the num-

ber of visible parameters to the ones that are considered important for the user. Changes in the settings require that the user has engi-neering or administrator rights in COM600.
4. Event and alarm lists
Events and alarms are identified by date, time, bay, device, object description or status. Furthermore, the events and alarms can be automatically filtered according to voltage level or bay criteria. Maximum memory ca-pacity is 65535 events. First-in, first-out logic is used for overwriting events. The user can export an event list to a .csv file for further analysis. COM600 supports printing of events to an Event Printer for long time archiving.
5. Disturbance and fault record handling
COM600 automatically downloads distur-bance records from the connected IEDs. The disturbance records are saved in the stand-
ard COMTRADE format. In-depth analysis is enabled using ABB’s Wineve software or any other commercially available disturbance record analyzer supporting the COMTRADE format. Downloading of disturbance records requires use of the IEC 61850-8-1 communi-cation protocol.
COM600 including the optional HMI func-tionality supports the viewing of fault records from the 615 series IEDs. The records en-able the user to analyze recent power system events. Each record includes current, voltage and angle values, etc. The fault records are marked with consecutive fault numbers and time stamps indicating when the faults were detected.
6. Data historian
The COM600 data historian is a real-time database designed and optimized for process information management and extensive his-tory recording. The data historian is based on ABB’s cpmPlus Knowledge Manager software. It combines the benefits of an easy-to-use real-time database with industrial reliability, performance, and real-time functionality to

provide an excellent platform for process information management. The data historian can be used for accurate process perfor-mance monitoring by following process and equipment performance calculations with real-time and history values. Better under-standing of the process behaviour by join-ing time-based process measurements with production and maintenance events helps the user to understand the process dynamics. It further provides required information for learning how to keep the process running. High performance and reliability, together with maintenance-free operation, provide a solid platform for trending. The optional data historian functionality offers means of stor-ing, analyzing and presenting process data.
Please note that displaying of data historian information using the HMI requires that Mi-crosoft Internet Explorer is used.
7. Logic processor
COM600 offers an straightforward approach to the languages specified by the IEC 61131-3 standard for programmable logic controllers (PLC). The programmable logic processor in COM600 is offered as a selectable software option. The PLC programming system enables programming and execution of automation tasks. In addition, the IEC 61131-3 program-ming in COM600 offers on-line and off-line functionality for engineering and diagnostics.
The logic process can be used for applica-tions such as grouping of signals or tripping of all bus breakers, if one of the breakers fails to clear the fault. COM600 collects any analog or binary IED data using standard serial and TCP/IP based protocols such as IEC 61850, DNP3 or Modbus. In the created logic, the logic processor, use the analog and binary data from the IEDs. The output of the created logic can be sent to the IEDs for trip-ping or alarm purposes.

8. Access control and substation security
To protect COM600 from unauthorized ac-cess and to maintain information integrity, COM600 is provided with a four-level, role-based authentication system with administra-tor-programmable individual passwords for the viewer, operator, engineer and administra-tor level. Further, the security features include host-based firewalls and communication en-cryption using the secure HTTPS (hypertext transfer protocol secure) protocol.
9. Substation integration
COM600 provides connectivity to a range of ABB systems. The connectivity to ABB’s low voltage motor control center MNS iS is provided using an OPC server in COM600. COM600 receives data from the MNSiS devic-
es and provides a human-machine interface (HMI) and gateway functionality for a smooth integration. Further, COM600 offers connec-tivity to ABB’s Automation System 800xA and MicroSCADA by means of OPC or other com-munication protocols.
10. Integration of ABB IEDs
COM600 supports ABB’s connectivity pack-age concept which simplifies system configu-ration and integration of IEDs. A connectivity package is a collection of software and spe-cific IED information, which enable system products and tools to connect and interact with the IED. The connectivity packages re-duce the risk of errors in system integration, minimizing device configuration and set-up times. The engineering in COM600 is done

by selecting the connectivity package for the IED version and configuration or by import-ing the configuration file from the IED.
11. Commissioning and troubleshooting
COM600 offers several tools and functions to support efficient commissioning and trou-bleshooting of the substation. The built-in IED simulation functionality enables testing and verifying of the correct operation of the HMI and gateway configuration of COM600 without any physical connection of IEDs. Further, communication diagnostic events can be enabled to track all messages being sent by or received from the IEDs.
Using the Station Automation Builder 600 (SAB600) tool provided with COM600 on-line diagnostic data, real-time process data, the communication channels and the control function of the IEDs can be analyzed without separate protocol analyzers.
12. Communication
COM600 is designed to support the IEC 61850 standard, and can thereby conveniently be integrated in IEC 61850 systems. Using the IEC 61850-8-1 GOOSE profile COM600 supports GOOSE messaging between the IEC 61850 compliant IEDs and the Station Au-tomation device COM600. Further, COM600 supports GOOSE messaging between several COM600 devices in the system. Apart from IEC 61850, COM600 supports a wide range of master communication protocols. This ena-bles the connection of both IEC 61850 devic-es and other devices which are not IEC 61850 compliant to the system. For example, native IEC 61850 protection and control IEDs can be connected to COM600 using the IEC 61850 protocol while meters can be connected to COM600 using the Modbus protocol.
Due to the vast amount of by data gener-ated by modern IEC 61850 compliant devices it may in some cases be necessary to limit the amount of information presented to the

SCADA-system (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) or DCS (Distributed Con-trol System) to avoid unnecessary informa-tion overflow. This is achieved by using the cross-reference tool of COM600 when map-ping information to slave protocols. Reducing information to higher-level systems not only reduces load but also increases security as it is possible to, for example, disable control to a certain system.
COM600 can be configured as an IEC 61850 proxy server enabling the connection of non IEC 61850 compliant devices to then system. COM600 converts the incoming data accord-ing to the IEC 61850 protocol. The IEC 61850 proxy server of COM600 is thereby very use-ful during for example extensions.
In addition, COM600 offers OPC client and server connectivity. This enables data access and data sharing between the non-electrical system and the electrical system supporting OPC.
13. Communication redundancy
To maintain and improve the reliability of the communication network and the communi-cation between the IEDs and COM600, IEC 62439/PRP (parallel redundancy protocol)-based communication is supported. PRP is based on duplicated networks, where each message is sent via both networks. The first of the received messages is accepted whereas the duplicate is discarded. Message replica-tion and discarding is done by the DuoDriver in COM600. Further, the DuoDriver hides the two networks from upper level applica-tions. IEC 62439/PRP-based communication requires that COM600 is equipped with the optional LAN card and that the IEDs used support PRP.
In addition, COM600 supports switch fault tolerance (SFT) provided that the optional LAN-card and COM600 are connected to two separate switches. SFT creates a failover relationship between the two adapters con-nected to separate switches. The manager responsibility is transferred from one agent to the other in case of a failure. The Switch Fault Tolerance feature of the Intel network adapter requires the Teaming Feature to be enabled.
14. Smart Grid
COM600 can be ordered with a fault detec-tion, fault isolation and load restoration (FDIR) function suitable for radial distribu-tion networks. The FDIR function gathers data from protection and control IEDs in-stalled in the radial distribution networks and substations and automatically runs a fault detection, fault isolation and load restoration (FDIR) algorithm using the Logic Processor of COM600. The FDIR function continuously up-dates the network status by receiving switch status and load signals from the IEDs.
When a fault occurs in the network, the FDIR function locates the fault based on switch open and trip information received from the IED of the affected feeder. Further, the FDIR analyzes the network and if the fault is found, the FDIR function isolates the fault from the network. When the fault is isolated the FDRIR function tries to restore supply to the healthy part of the network without overloading the switches or power sources. After the fault has been cleared and the return to normal command has been given the FDIR function sends commands to the IEDs to restore the network to the normal pre-fault condition.

16. Tools
Engineering of COM600 is done offline on a separate computer using the Microsoft® .NET-based SAB600 engineering tool supplied with COM600. The configurability and functionali-ty of COM600 depends on the communication protocol used for communication between COM600 and the IEDs. The connectivity pack-ages for ABB’s protection and control IEDs enable an efficient configuration of COM600. The connectivity packages include descrip-tions of the data and signals available in the
IEDs. The descriptions are used to automati-cally configure the master communication of COM600.
At project engineering SAB600 uses the potential of the IEC 61850 standard by sup-porting the IEC 61850 based SCL (Substation Configuration Description Language) file import, including the import of the communi-cation and graphical parts of the SCL-file. The finalized projects are updated from SAB600 to COM600 at site or remotely provided that a secure Ethernet connection is available.
