Reflexes

• An action that is performed without conscious thought as a response to a stimulus.

Rooting

• reflex consisting of head-turning and sucking movements elicited in a normal infant by gently stroking the side of the mouth or cheek.

Palmar Grasp

• A flexion of the fingers caused by stimulation of the palm of the hand

• Appears at birth and disappears around 5 to 6 months of age.

Moro

• startle reflex: a normal reflex of young infants; a sudden loud noise causes the child to stretch out the arms and flex the legs.

Babinski Reflex

• An extension of the great toe, sometimes with fanning of the other toes, in response to stroking of the sole of the foot. It is a normal reflex in infants, but it is usually associated with a disturbance of the pyramidal tract in children and adults.

• Babinski reflex is one that goes away and is replaced by the plantar reflex.(As the nervous system becomes more complex, a number of those reflexes go away and others are retained)

Stepping Reflex

• movements of progression elicited when the infant is held upright and inclined forward with the soles of the feet touching a flat surface.

• Should be gone within 3 to 4 months of age.

FTT

• In the first few years of life most kids gain weight and grow much more quickly than they will later on. Sometimes kids don’t meet expected standards of growth. Most still follow growth patterns that are variations of normal, but others are considered to have “Failure to Thrive”

SIDS

• Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is the unexpected, sudden death of a child under the age of 1 in which an autopsy does not know an explanation of why it happened.-
