Birth rates fall rapidly(20 per 1000), while

death rates continueto fall (15 per 1000)

The fall in birth rate may be due to:

- Family planning (contraceptives,Sterilisation, abortion, etc)

- A lower infant mortality rate,therefore less need to have

so many children.- Increased industrialisation: fewer labourers are needed.

- Increased desire for materialpossessions (cars, holidays...)

- Emancipation of women

Both birth rates (12 per 1000) anddeath rates (10 per 1000) remain low,

fluctuating slightly to give a steadypopulation
