1954 The Jazz Messengers , the first "hard bop" jazz ensemble, is started by leader Art Blakey.

1955Early rock and roll is broadcast on WINS by Alan Freed. Freed plays an important role in popularizing the new genre of rock and roll.

1956Doo-wop, a musical style heavily based on vocal harmonies, is epitomized by performers such as Little Anthony and the Imperials (top) and Dion and the Belmonts (bottom).

1958 Tito Puente, the “King of Latin Music” releases his best known album, Dance Mania.

1960Jazz Saxophonist John Coltrane leaves Miles Davis’ band and forms his own group.

1961Bob Dylan arrives in New York City, playing Greenwich Village folk clubs. By 1963, he becomes nationally famous.

1962/63 The Brill Building pop song “factory” peaks. The Ronettes partner with Phil Spector and Be My Baby is a huge hit.

1965 The Velvet Underground meet Andy Warhol. The band is hugely influential on future musicians.

1968 Fillmore East, New York’s leading venue for rock, opens in the East Village.

1971The glam and protopunk rock band the New York Dolls is established.

1972DJ Kool Herc develops hip hop in the Bronx.

1973 CBGBs established by Hilly Kristal on the Bowery.

1974 The Ramones, often cited as the first punk rock band, are formed in Forest Hills, Queens.

1978 Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five usher in early hip group in the South Bronx. “The Message” is released in 1980.

1979 Latin Jazz musician Jerry Gonzalez starts his innovative Fort Apache Band.

1981 MTV (Music Television) is launched and music videos become the rage.

1984 Madonna, living in the East Village in relative obscurity, breaks as a superstar.

1984 Run-DMC, from Hollis, Queens, have first gold record, Run-DMC.

1986Beastie Boys go national with License to Ill .

1987 The Knitting Factory is established, spawning the eclectic, experimental music of the Downtown Music Scene.

1991 Jazz at Lincoln Center established.

1993 Wu-Tang Clan issue first (hit) album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).

1994 Notorious B.I.G. releases Ready to Die which goes four times platinum.

1995 Sonic Youth headline Lollapalooza.

1999 Christina Aguilera's self-titled debut album is a huge hit.

2001Alicia Keyes releases Grammy award winning album, Songs in a Minor.

2002Norah Jones launches her solo career with hit album Come Away With Me.

2003 Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs break through with Fever to Tell.

2005 50 Cent releases his most commercially successful album, The Massacre .

Jay-Z releases The Blueprint 3.
