1) Describe the different ways of subscribing to podcast
2) Demonstrate how to locate and subscribe to educational podcasts relevant to their field.
3) Subscribe to a podcast series in Google Reader.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Over view
S ubscription is optional. You don’t have to subscribe to
podcasts to enjoy them. You can either have it streamed
over the internet or downloaded to your computer to be en-
joyed at another time. However, having a subscription makes
it a lot more convenient. It allows you to receive updated
information without having to check for new ones. It is, after
all, what makes Podcasts uniquely different from other down-
loadable digital files on the internet.
Podcast subscription is possible through the use of RSS feeds, indicated by the above
icon, which stands for Really Simple Syndication. It is a format that podcasters use to pro-
vide you with frequently updated content.

W hen you come across podcasts on
the podcaster’s original website,
you can subscribe to them in a number of
ways using:
Web-based readers
Web-based readers like Google Reader check
for feeds and download them so you can
have them any time any where. The files
reside in your Google Account. Even
YouTube may fall in this category.
Client software
Client software like iTunes allows you to
browse and search for podcasts that have
advertised with them.
Web-browser
Browsers including Internet Explorer & Fire-
fox check for feeds automatically, and can
be added to your bookmarks / favorites.
What you need:
Podcatcher: iTunes, Juice
Aggregator: Bloglines, Google Reader
Web-browser: Internet Explorer or Firefox

podcaster’s website
and start browsing &
listening to podcasts.

2. Go to the
podcaster’s website.
Locate the Subscribe
Icon or Link. Click the
Subscribe link given on
the podcaster’s
website, and you will
see different options.
On NPR, you can add
to iGoogle, Google
Reader, or your
Favorites Center on
your browser.
3. If you choose to add
it to your iGoogle, you
will see it on your
iGoogle page whenev-
er you log into your
Google account.

4. Make sure you are
signed into Google
Reader. Go to the
podcaster’s website
and locate the feed
URL, if available.
Copy and paste that
into Google Reader’s
Add a subscription
box, and click Add.
Or, you can go to
Google Reader and use
the Add a
subscription box as a
search box to find your
podcast feed.
5. Once you have
completed the
subscription, you will
see it on your
subscription list, and
the podcasts will
automatically populate
on your screen.

6. In Internet Explorer
8, the RSS feed icon
appears on your
toolbar. When you
visit a website that has
podcasts, you will see
it light up in orange.
Click on it to see
available podcasts.
8. In Firefox, the RSS
feed in the tool bar
becomes active when it
detects available
podcasts on a website
you visit. Click on it to
see options for
subscribing using
different readers.

Using iTunes: A Pod-catcher or Cl ient

9. Start up iTunes &
click on iTunes
Store. Then key in a
search term in the
search box.
10. Alternatively, you
can click on Podcasts
or iTunes U to
browse available or
featured podcasts.
11. Once you have
selected a podcast, you
will see a list of
episodes. Hover on
any one of them and
click on the play
button to start listening

13. To view all your
subscriptions, click on
Podcasts in the
Library menu on the
left.
12. Click on the
Subscribe Free
button to subscribe.
14. When you right-
click on one of your
subscriptions, you
have options including
Unsubscribe, and
Copy Podcast URL.

Tip: Use Copy Pod-
