PLANT CHECKLIST FOR THE BODIE HILLS, MONO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA and MINERAL COUNTY, NEVADA.
compiled by Dean W. Taylor
The Bodie Hills are an isolated, arid, high elevation range situated in the rain shadow of the central
Sierra Nevada. The arid, seemingly bleak, unforested scene presented to visitors to the ghost town of
Bodie is in stark contrast to that of the Sierra with its snowcovered peaks and abundant watery canyons
visible just to the west.
The floristic composition of the Bodie Hills has been subject to two previous comprehensive
investigations: Messick (1982) and Lavin (1983). The purpose of my compilation of this checklist is to
provide a template for future collections, which analysis now indicates are in order.
The flora of the Bodie Hills was the subject of a wide‐ranging floristic inventory by Messick (1982),
whom collected extensively throughout the entire range. Messick’s collections are housed at HSU
(abbreviations follow Index Herbariorum), which are not yet computerized.
Lavin (1983) also conducted wide‐ranging floristic inventories in the region of the Bodie Hills. His
voucher specimens are at RENO and also not yet computerized. Lavin reported his checklist for the
region in a manner that does not permit to ascertain specific records for the Bodie Hills: he combined
the Masonic Hills (considered part of the Bodie Hills flora) with the Pine Grove Hills and with the west
slope of the Pine Nut Hills, separate basin ranges to the north.
Figure 1. Map of the Bodie Hills region: the red line indicates the limit of the flora area as defined by Messick
(1982) and for which specimen records were included in the checklist
Table 1. Principal collectors of Bodie Hills flora, and their proportional contribution (based on specimens from
the Consortium of California Herbaria, and other specimen databases. The numbers tabulated represent only
those data gleaned from databases, and does not reflect from consideration of the material which may not yet
be accessible on‐line (i.e. CAS). Collectors unknown to Messick (1982) are indicated by an asterisk.

The remainder of the 41 known collectors have contributed fewer than 10 specimens . Other than the inventory
study by Messick, The pattern of collection is indicative of specimens being gathered while passing by the region
on Highway 395 and or on a visit to Bodie. Overall, the collection information based on specimens suggests the
flora of the range is not yet well documented: perhaps only 75% to 80% of the potential total. Of the 539 plants
on the checklist, Messick was able to documented nearly 80% (a proportion similar to the intensive collections in
the White Mountains by Morefield (Morefield et al. 1988, whom documented about the same fraction of the
flora of that range).
The specimen records show two active periods in which new taxa were added to the checklist (Figure 3) at a
rapid rate: between 1939‐1945 over 200 taxa were documented for the first time, comparable to the 243 new
taxa documented during Mesick’s thesis. My experience suggests that presently something on the order of 75%
of the potential flora is documented, and as such a third period of active collecting would be productive. A
principal objective of my compilation of this checklist was to determine the proportion of taxa vouchered by
Consortium specimens: which is low at about only 50%, even though Mono County is a comparable well
collected county in California, the Bodie Hills are regionally undercollected.

California Herbaria, and other specimen databases. The numbers tabulated represent only those data gleaned
from databases, and does not reflect from consideration of the material which may not yet be accessible on‐line

The high elevation of the Bodie Hills is sufficient to produce subalpine conditions: snowbanks form (or, rather,
formed) on the northerly slopes of Bodie Mountain (3099 m) and Potato Peak (3131 m) and support a snowbed
plant community, as diagnosed by the presence of Carex helleri. A number of plants of the high Sierra occur in
the region (indicated in RED in the checklist) which are indicative of high elevation nival or mesic sites, and
which can be considered particularly vulnerable able to the potential effects of climate change, should snow
cover duration and/or amount become reduced (e.g. Hulsea algida, Draba breweri, Poa keckii). Current climate
is summarized in Table 3 below.
Table 3. Climate of Bodie. Data from the 1965‐1979 period taken from Messick (1982), data from 1996‐2008
from California Dept. Water Resources, Data Exchange center website). The limited data suggest that the recent
period 13 yr period has been considerably dry compared to the earlier 15 yr period.

Floristic Relationships of the Bodie Hills Flora (Figure 2)
Comparison of the taxon composition of the Bodie Hills Flora is now possible, which it was not at the time of
Messick’s thesis (1982). A simple compositional comparison, based on Sorenson’s Coefficient, is show below.
S = Sweetwater Mountains (Taylor, unpub., Lavin 1983); S = Walker River headwaters of the Sierra, Lavin 1983; Y
= Yosemite National Park, Botti 2000; G = Glass Mountain, Honer 2000; W=White Mountains, Morefield et al.
1988. The relative size and color of each arrow corresponds to the overall floristic similarity. The flora of the
Bodie Hills is most similar to that of the Sweetwater Mountains (0.67) and the Walker River headwaters of the
Sierra Nevada (0.57), and is relatively unlike the flora of the western slope of the Sierra Nevada, based on
comparison to Yosemite National Park (0.29). The similarity to the White Mountains is intermediate (0.46).
Similarity to other sSNH florulas (not shown) is also intermediate, 0.48 to Bishop Creek (Crowther and Crowther
n.d.) and 0.41 to Rock Creek Lakes (Pierson 1938, 1941). Similarity to a desert range, the Cottonwood
Mountains near Death Valley (Peterson 1986), is very low (0.17). Overall, the Bodie Hills flora is of a cold desert
northern affinity.

Figure 3. History of documentation of the Bodie Hills flora. The accrual of taxa exhibits a relatively constant
slow rate in the two periods (1945‐1975 & 1980‐present) between the active periods of floristic exploration.
