Edward Lamson Henry (1841-1919) at the age of seventy. A native of Charleston, South Carolina, Henry studied in Philadelphia and first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1859. Ten years later

he was elected to the Academy. Noted for his genre scenes of coaches, train stations, and farms, his works provide a graphic record of late 19th century Amer- ican rural life.
