Personal Comms - Overview
Definition:These are the application technologies directly related to voice andvideo based communications along with the cellular based services for the platform.
Key Drivers:Voice communication continues to be the primary feature of mobilephones and is the main revenue generator for operators. Videocommunications are an extension of this. Cellular services stillunderpin the majority of these communications, as well as being theprimary bearer for other data services.
Primary Stakeholders:Device manufacturersOperators wanting to extend functionalitySilicon Vendors offering cellular bearer technologiesDevelopers interested in realtime IP functionalities

General ObjectivesThere are a number of general objectives common to the entire platform such SHAI,battery life and performance improvement.
User ExperienceUser experience is the key decision factor for end users and so improving user experience is vital to increase end adoption of the platform.
Standards ComplianceThe telephony standards bodies are continuously evolving their specifications and inorder for devices to penetrate as wide a spectrum of networks as possible, as completea set of these standards should be supported.
High Speed DataPacket data is the key revenue driver for the current wave of new mobile applications,
and high speed access to that data enables greater return on investment for allstakeholders in the Personal Communications domains.
Telephony ConvergenceConvergence of voice, multimedia, data and fixed-line services will bring a greater user experience for end users as well as enable applications to leverage and offer a wider breadth of services.

Domain InitiativesUser ExperienceThe majority of competing platforms have a morecompelling phone experience for the user.
This is influenced by a number of factors:Maturity of the Touch UILong history of the non-touch phone apps
Initiatives:
Short term improvements to address some of the biggest problemsDirectUI total face-lift to the Phone application and its associated UI's

Standards Compliance
Symbian has been predominantlydeployed on UMTS / GSM networks, and enjoys a high degree of compliance for these standards.
Most other platforms offer supportthe CDMA standard, although
sometimes at the expense of compliance in other areas.
Standards always evolve - it's vital tomaintain good compliance.
Initiatives:Support TD-SCDMA for 3G networks employed by CMCC with 493m subscribersSupport CDMAfor networks employed throughout the US & Korea

Domain InitiativesHigh Speed Data
Symbian is currently the onlycomparable OS which a has7.2 / 5.7 Mbps HSD/UPA.
Tomorrows data technologies willrequire speeds of 100Mbps
Symbian^3 brings 'Freeway' settingSymbian in place to reach thesethroughputs
Initiatives: Develop solutions for LTE - the dominant next generation high speed data standard SMP optimisations using Freeway to enhance throughput in high speed data use-cases

Domain InitiativesTelephony Convergence
Most competing platforms limit theability to deploy VoIP systems:
Lack of appropriate runtimesFailure to enable service integrationBlocking of after-market apps
Symbian can go further in the
integration of Multimedia, Data andVoice services along with presenceand location awareness.
Initiatives:
Provide advanced VoIP technologies: Voice Conferencing and Video Sharing All IP services will drive telephony convergence and flexible bearer mobility
