playful and be given different perspective

necklace made with high quality sterling

The Process

Testing on MaterialsUsing real colour pencils are a

time consuming and frustrating,

as I could not get the perfect

and consistent cut.

Initially, I want to machine

saw coloured pencils and

assemble them later. The size

of the pencils is just too tiny

for heavy machining. Since

the main aim for Cybercraft

class is to implement industrial

machinery into the process of

craft manufacturing, I decided

that laser cutting would be the

best solution. Also I am aiming

for a polished finish, this method

of production is not reliable and

risky.

Testing out a 3mm MDF for laser cutting

with the files that I have done in

illustrator.

I set the laser cut machine to etch the

detail of the colour pencils and it is

time consuming. Further more, when I

try to paint on them, I found it hard to

spread the paint evenly. I also found

that the MDF have burn cuts that are

unappealing.

Therefore, painting on the surface that

is not etched by the machine is easier.

Painting is time consuming, because I

have used many colours on individual

product. Even though time is heavily

used up in the process, I am prioritizing

on the aesthetic of colour in my finish

product.

Laser Cutting

The Illustrator FileEven thought the process of laser cutting

is simple and direct, I found there are many

minute problems that could change the

outcome of my product. One of the problems

that I found is the burn cut of the laser. My

material is 4mm plywood and size is a problem.

The illustrator file cannot let me justify on how

small I can go with cutting the materials. Since

the size of the product is small, I found that

the burn edge of the main problem. The holes

that I created to cut made the smaller pieces

brittle and easy to chip off.

The details of the pendants are vector lines,

which I choose over etching. It gives me the

detail I want but It just makes the edge of the

pendant brittle and breaks off easily even

with care handling. To me, this is considered

as failed product. With that I eliminates vector

lines that touch the edge of the pendant and

put tolerance around it. The gap between the

details and the cut is a better solution and the

outcome is more satisfying and success.

Post Laser Cutting

Shellac There is a step for me to separate the clean

pendants and the fail ones. The next process is

to paint them. I test out the pieces with shellac

by brushing them evenly. After comparing the

pieces with and without the shellac, I decided

to go with shellac. The wood colour is just more

contrast and aesthetically better.

Painting Painting the pieces are time consuming and lots

of handling and caring to apply and even and

smooth paint.

Assembling

I have made layouts of how the

necklace should look like prior to

assembling as I could just refer

hack and forth to the design. I am

aiming for a clean and high quality

necklaces and the chains are made

from silver for daily wear.

Photography

Photography of the final product is essential. I would display them nicely as

to give the product more value.

I will even do a photoshoot of the necklace with human model.

VisualsI have also made illustrator layout and patter to accompany with my

products. I made sure that the visuals are related with the theme of the

final product.
