History

• Born June 7, 1848 in Paris, France

• Was first a sailor, then successful stockbroker

• By 35, his life was devoted to painting

• Left his wife and 5 children

• Died May 8, 1903 in Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia

Early LifeEarly Life

-When Paul was three his parents sailed for Lima, Peru, after the victory of Louis Napoleon (1769–1821). His father died during the trip. -Gauguin and his mother remained in Lima for four years.-He lived a comfortable life as a kid.-At the age of seventeen he enlisted in the merchant marine.-In 1870 he became a stock broker and he stayed in that profession for twelve years.

Influences

• Recognized as a founding father of modern art• Using nature to start, he abstracted figures to

give a sense of mystery. • Used expressive, irregular shapes and strong

contrast• Both his personality and his principles of coloring

and composition made a strong influence on modern painting.
