Parking Problems

- Growing Student Population- Construction- Information Signs- Wait Times (UMB Easy Pass)- Searching for Parking Spots- Faculty & Staff Designated Parking- Communication (Human to Human)- Budget

Skills

• General Problem Solving• Electronics I & II • Image Processing• Programming Skills• Be able to work in Teams

Contacts

• Steve Martinson– Director Transportation Services– Steve.martinson@umb.edu– www.umb.edu– 617-287-5043 (Direct)– 617-438-3393 (Cell)

The ProblemCurrent Limitations:• Size of Measurement Channel• Scalability• Bandwidth (multiplexing)• Dynamic Range• Tunability

Potential CustomersQuantum Information Processing (QIP):• Industry: Google ($100M), IBM ($3B), Microsoft, Northrop

Grumman, Raytheon, D-wave ($62M), Intel ($50M) …• Federal Agencies: DARPA, IARPA, NSF, DOD: Army, NSA ($80M)

… • Academic: UCSB, Yale, Berkeley, MIT, UMass Boston …• VC Interest: Quantum Valley ($100M), YC Combinator ($2.5M),

In-Q-Tel and Bezos Expeditions ($30M) …

Market:• $26B by 2020*• 50-100 units/year• Market Capture ~$1M/year• Large growth potential

Solution

Traveling Wave Parametric Amplifier:• Scalability• Wide Bandwidth (> 5 GHz)• Dynamic Range (> -90 dBm)• Amplification in transmission

Competition:• Research grade Josephson Parametric

Amplifiers• Nanowire based TWPAs

Auto Slide StainerFor Clinical Laboratories Binyam Gemeda

Most clinical labs have

one of these. To stain slides with Wright giemsa stain for visualization of blood cells.

Stained slide.WBC, RBC and PLT cells

For Gram and Acid

fast stain however, All microbiology labs stain slides the old way as it was many many decades ago with out any modification.

General purpose stainer.Wright Giemsa stain + Gram stain + Acid Fast stain

We need:3D printer : ABS or PLAStepper motor and H-bridge to drive motorMicrocontroller and universal device programmer

We need:Atmega 32 or 16, Atmel studio 6Autodesk Maya to generate the STL file for 3D print, Knowledge of C, LCD displaygear, shafts, linear ball bearings, timing belts, pinion pulley and aluminum clamps

Human-Powered Generator

Problem Description

• Limited resources• Saving energy• Green energy

• Power shortage problem in developing countries

System Diagram

To-do

• How to collect the generated power from the mechanical motion

(clockwise and counter clockwise motions)• Rectifier – convert AC to DC• Convert – charge a specific voltage battery (eg 12V)• Inverter - convert DC to AC

Garden WandBringing smart gardens to life

Problems

• Food is expensive• Gardening is hard• Apps for anything

Impact

User StoryMy garden wand should be easy to set up with my phone. I should be able to turn it on and stick it in the ground, getting instant feedback about my personal garden based on my location and the garden itself. Once my personalized garden is characterized, I can plant what I like from the suggested vegetables, and maybe even order the seeds. Once the garden is in motion, continuous monitoring of its conditions should make upkeep easy, perhaps even watering for me.

Prior Art, Competitive Advantage, & Project Skills- Many projects are indoors/small scale, only/lacking app, only water/monitor.- Outdoors or indoors. Plans, monitors, and waters. Has a flashy app and physical design.- Circuits, embedded systems, wifi/bluetooth, coding, 3D design, physics, reactive data.
