PAPERBy: Elmer T. Rañada and John Emar P. Ocampo

B.S. Information Technology-1A

Paper was invented by the Cai Lun by 105 AD during the Han Dynasty and spread slowly to the west via the Silk Road. Papermaking and manufacturing in Europe started in the Iberian Peninsula, today's Portugal and Spain and Sicily in the 10th century by the Muslims living there at the time, and slowly spread to Italy and South France reaching Germany by 1400. Earlier, other paper-like materials were in use in Kazakhstan like papyrus, parchment and vellum.

Paper vs. Plastic

• Paper comes from trees, and the pulpwood tree industry is large.

Paper

• When paper is thrown away, it can go to one of two places: The landfill or the recycling center. If it goes to the landfill, it will decay in time. If it is recycled, the paper will go through a lengthy process of disintegration and renewal.

• The recycling of paper is essential in cutting down on landfills: each day, enough paper is recycled to fill a fifteen-mile long train of boxcars.

Plastic• Plastic comes from oil, and the oil industry is no small

operation.

• Like paper, when plastic has been used, it can go to one of two places: The landfill or the recycling center. In a landfill, plastics make up 7% of the waste by weight, and 18% by volume.

• Plastic impacts in two ways: First, it hits the environment in its use of electricity when being manufactured.

Benefits of Paper Bag

• 100% reusable, recyclable and biodegradable.

• Easier to carry than plastic bags.• Holds more items than plastic bags =

fewer bags to handle.• Environmentally preferred.• Contains 40% post-consumer recycled

material.• A renweable resource - comes from trees

Benefits of Paper Bag

In 875 CE Chinese invent toilet paper

Today, more than 95 percent of paper is made from wood cellulose.

Ancient Egyptians invented the first paper like material, called papyrus.

Advantages and

Disadvantages of

Paper

Advantages

1. Cheap method of storing information.

2. Readily available.

3. Easily transportable.

4. Available in convenient sizes.

5. Environment Friendly.

Disadvantages1. The manufacturing processes needed to make paper bags result in

plenty of leftover waste.

2. To produce paper bags, the natural environment is being demolished, since wood is needed in paper's manufacture.

3. The processes used in making paper bags include the heating of the wood chips in a pressurized environment via a chemical solution; harmful products such as acid and bleach are also a part of these processes.

4. Paper bag production uses a great deal of energy. The processes involved, from cutting down each log to making the finished bag, are long.
