Thank you to everyone who has already made a
pledge to the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual
Appeal (CMAA). Your gifts will benefit so many
through the thirty ministries our annual appeal
supports.
Our parish’s goal for the 2018 CMAA is $106,700.
Our hope is that every parishioner will contribute as
partners in caring, as every gift — large and small —
makes a difference. If we raise more than our goal,
70% of the amount paid over goal will be returned to us
for our use. This is an amazing opportunity for our
parish!
Please prayerfully reflect on your pledge to this year’s
CMAA. In-pew envelopes are still available in the
church, or you can make a gift online at
jolietdioceseappeal.org.

LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. All from the age of 18 years up to the beginning of their 60
th year are
bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Church year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

HOLY LAND COLLECTION As we continue in the season of Lent, this special penitential season of the liturgical year is an excellent time to turn our thoughts even more toward our mission of growing in a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and supporting our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. Lent offers another special opportunity to support the Christians and the institutions in the land of His birth, death and Resurrection. This is the third year that the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre are helping promote the Good Friday Collection. None of the monies collected on Good Friday go to the Equestrian Order. Rather 100% of these funds go to maintain the holy sites that are visited by our pilgrims and support numerous Franciscan apostolates that directly help the Christians in the Holy Land. Thank you for your anticipated generous assistance.

Save The Date! The Holy Spirit Prayer Group invites you to an evening with William Beckman on Tuesday April 10 at 7:00 pm in the Padua Center. William Beckman is the retired executive director of Illinois Right to Life Committee
(IRLC) in Chicago. In that role he covered and researched topics on a wide variety of life issues including abortion, contraception, stem cell research, in vitro fertilization, assisted suicide, euthanasia, hospice, brain death, and other end-of-life issues. He maintained an extensive website to make that information available to the public. He has been involved in the Pro-Life movement since 1974, leading Pro-Life activities in his own community, including: annual Life Chains, monthly vigils at Planned Parenthood, and Pro-Life coordinator at his church. He has also served on the board of directors of a pregnancy care center since 2000 and held his position at Illinois Right to Life Committee from 2001 through 2013. William developed and recorded radio messages on a variety of life issues. These messages have been played on a number of Chicago area radio stations. He edited a quarterly newsletter that was mailed to the members of Illinois Right to Life Committee. He is married to Nancy with four grown children, three of them married, and with eight grandchildren.

Catechist Corner What are Sacramentals?
Sacramentals are sacred signs or sacred actions
in which a blessing is conferred. Examples of
sacramentals are holy water, the consecration of
a bell or an organ, the blessing of a house or an
automobile, the blessing of throats on the feast
of St. Blaise, receiving ashes on Ash Wednesday,
palm branches on Palm Sunday, the Easter
candle, and the blessing of produce on the feast
of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We
should make use of the sacramentals with faith
and devotion, and never make them objects of
superstition. (YOUCAT questions 271-272)
Dig Deeper: CCC section (1667-1672)
This week we celebrate Palm Sunday, which is
also called Passion Sunday, we hear the
details about several events: Jesus’ Last
Supper, his prayer in the garden of
Gethsemane, Judas’s betrayal, the arrest of
Jesus, Peter’s denial of Jesus, and how Jesus
was accused and sentenced to death. When
we hear this Gospel, we discover that Jesus
was alone when he died on the cross. Before
he died, Jesus cried out to God, asking why
God had abandoned him. Jesus felt completely
abandoned and alone as he died on the cross.
But the Gospel also tells us that some were
looking on from the distance. In dying alone on
the cross, Jesus identifies himself with all
those who are forgotten and alone in our
world. Jesus wants us to bring his good news
to those who feel alone. God appeared to be
absent when Jesus died on the cross, but we
know that he wasn’t. By raising Jesus from the
dead, God was saying to all of those who are
forgotten and alone in the world that he cares
for them.
Question for Children: Name one thing that you
will do each day this week to remind you that
Jesus died and rose to new life for you.
Question for Adults: We hear the story of Jesus’
death each year. What did you hear differently
this year? How has your faith changed in the
past year?
Lenten Learnings
This Sunday, called Palm or Passion Sunday,
is the first day of Holy Week. Holy Thursday,
Good Friday, and the Easter Vigil on Holy Sat-
urday are called the Triduum—three days that
are the highlight of the Church year. During
Holy Week, we prayerfully remember the
events of Jesus’ passion and death. As we
meditate on the cross, we ask again and anew
what it means to make the statement of faith,
that Jesus, in his obedient suffering and dying,
revealed himself to us as God’s Son.

KEEP HOLY THE SABBATH There’s no better way to deepen our Lenten practice than to
review the Ten Commandments. The first three, having to do
with our right relationship to God, get the most ink. The one we
busy people probably have the most problem with is keeping
holy the Sabbath.
If we take this commandment literally, babies will go
undiapered and dishes will stay on the table, or perhaps meals
will not be served. The sick will go unattended and nothing that
has anything to do with physical labor will be done. Is mental
labor really work? How about changing that dirty diaper (poor
baby!)?
We need to depend on God to discern how to observe real
Sabbath time in our lives. The point of this commandment is
that God has given us a great gift: one whole day per week
when we are free to rest, worship God, sing, feast, love, and
rejoice. As Psalm 19 proclaims: “The law of the LORD is
perfect, / refreshing the soul” (19:8). Our Sabbath rest is a
great gift, to be received from God with joy, not with nitpicking.

Dear St. Anthony Parishioners, We are reaching out to you on behalf of the St. Anthony Catholic Preschool. The mission of St. Anthony Catholic Preschool, in partnership with family, church, and community is to prepare our students spiritually, intellectually, physically, and socially for Kindergarten. Established in 1999, the administration and teachers of St. Anthony Catholic Preschool have been teaching young students in our community following the philosophy of parents as the primary educators who form the basis of a child’s earliest experiences of love, community, and faith. The early childhood education program builds upon this foundation and provides
developmentally appropriate experiences designed to meet psychological, emotional, social, spiritual, and cognitive needs of the young child. Additionally, the dignity of the individual child is recognized in this Christ centered environment. In order to sustain the mission and philosophy of the St. Anthony Catholic Preschool, we hold several small fundraisers throughout the year; however the majority of our funding comes from our main fundraiser held in the spring. This year our fundraiser, St. Anthony Catholic Preschool Fun ‘n’ Fit, will be held on April 21
st, 2018,
from 11:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. The fundraiser will start with a preschool wide walk-a-thon followed by a community wide funfest. We are actively seeking sponsorships and/or donations; whether that be a cash gift, product, service, event ticket or even a unused gift for our raffle baskets. Further information on Sponsorships can be found below. Donations can be mailed to or dropped off at St. Anthony Preschool, 7659 W. Sauk Trail, Frankfort, IL 60423. If you have any questions or need a donation picked up, please contact Pat Smart, Principal, at 815-469-5417. Further information about St. Anthony Catholic Preschool can be found on our website www.stanthonyfrankfort.com. Thank you in advance for your generosity. Together we can and do make a difference in the lives of many children! With gratitude,

PASSION The contrast between the processional reading in today’s liturgy and the proclamation of the Passion is striking. We are given a
glimpse of how profoundly the word of God is fulfilled in Jesus. First he must be hailed as the Messiah, the One who is to come. He must be acknowledged by all, though they do not know what they are saying. They think he is the promised king, a worldly king of the Jews who will free them from the Roman occupation. They do not yet understand, even the disciples, exactly where this triumphal procession is leading. In our lives, we too do not know where we are going. It is in faith that we can follow Christ wherever he may lead us, trusting that death is not the end, nor evil the victor.

St. Vincent dePaul Society St. Anthony Conference
Today is Palm Sunday and the beginning of the holiest of Christian weeks. Let us pray for the grace to
take up our own cross and to follow Jesus through death to new life. During Lent, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to bring the mercy of Jesus into
the hearts of those in need by assisting 45 families, providing food and helping some with utilities and other needs. We will also be giving the families we help a ham for their Easter Dinner. Thank you for participating in the Easter giving tree. You give hope and happiness to many children during this holiday season. Please note we will be having a Clothing/Coat Drive with St. Vincent DePaul truck in our parking lot May 5 & 6. If you have donations of clothing
or furniture prior to that do not bring to St. Anthony
but you can drop off at the SVDP store in Joliet or call for a home pick up (in our area on Wednesdays) 630-231-4658
