In this new classification (ICCP System 1994) the maceral grouphas been revised from its previous classification (ICCP, 1971) toaccommodate the nomenclature with changes in the other maceralgroups, especially the changes in the vitrinte classification(ICCP, 1998). The vitrinite and huminte systems have beenapproximated so that down to the level of sub-maceral groupsthe two systems can be used in parallel. On the level of maceralsand beyond the analyst now has, according to the purpose of theanalysis, the choice between the two classification systems forhuminite and vitrinite. This is in accordance with the newISO Coal Classification that will cover low rank coals as welland allow for a simultaneous use of the huminite and vitrinitenomenclature for low rank coals.
