This is Your Laptop• You may install any programs.• You may save music and pictures.• You may watch DVD’s.• You may burn CDs and DVDs• You may put Derek Jeter on your

desktop.• You may use email at school• Etc.

You May NOT• Remove the laptop from its case.• Instant Message while at school.• Download or stream Music/Videos while

at school. • YouTube, Radio stations, etc.• 100 MB traffic / day

• Visit sites that are blocked while at school.• Facebook, Meebo, vtunnel, etc.

Banned from the network !• You will not get internet.• Your name will appear under the

banned students list.• You must see Mr. Hotz in room 121

to get “re-instated”.• Multiple offenses mean longer wait

before reinstatement and/or parental conference.

Included Software• Windows 7• Microsoft Office 2010

• Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, FrontPage, Publisher, OneNote

• McAfee AntiVirus Protection• Adobe PhotoShop • Itunes

Proper Care• Laptop stays in case!• Use Power Adapter whenever

possible.• Avoid temperatures <40 >90.• Lock in locker when not in use.• Clean display with damp cloth.• Unplug adapter when not in use.

Repairs - Software• Slow performance• Windows does not start• Viruses & Spyware (pop-ups)

• Reimage• Replace Hard drive.• Back up “My Documents” onto CD’s ,

DVDs, USB drives before reimaging

Repairs - Hardware• Cracked Screen• Freezing• Not Starting

• Send out to IBM (Lenovo) repair • Usually 3 - 5 days. • You will be given “loaner” with your

hard drive swapped into it.

Preserving Battery Life• Options when not using:

• Sleep – still on, turns off display, reduces battery consumption

• Hibernate – shuts off power, remembering what it was doing

• Shut Down – closes all programs including windows

• Power Saving Schemes• Turn off Wireless when not needed

8 letter code• Both you and your computer are

on the network as your 8 letter code:• “14” – year of graduation.• First 3 letter of last name.• First 3 letter of first name.

• Thus Mary Smith is 14SmiMar

The IHA network• Within IHA there are several

servers on the network.• You may store schoolwork on

//Server1/Public/14/SmiMar• Teachers may place work on

//Server1/Teachfolder/Hotz

Connecting to the Internet• IHA uses a proxy servers

(192.168.100.3 .4 .5 or .7) to route all Internet traffic.

• In your browser, under tools, you’ll need to make sure that the proxy server box is • Checked at school. • Unchecked at home.

Wireless at Home• Your laptop should find and connect to

any unencrypted wireless network.• If your home network is encrypted, you

need to know the encryption key.• There is a home network help page at

Pick up AccessoriesAs your table is called• - Collect

• Sticker with your name• Stick it on Power Adapter

• Power Adapter• Power Cord• Case

• Throw out plastic & cardboard• Set aside Velcro strips• Affix shoulder strap into 2 D-rings.

Pick up LaptopAs your table is called• DO NOT OPEN !• DO NOT TURN ON !

Setting up Case• Remove battery

• Slide latch to the side• Slide battery up and out

• Reinstall battery• Stick and rub Velcro strips onto

laptop as per following picture:• Do not place Velcro on battery,

screws , labels or cracks.

Velcro Locations

Inserting Case• Open Case• Place Laptop centered on base.• Push onto Velcro.• Open laptop fully (180 degrees).• Slide display into clear plastic

“ears”.• Close Case

Power Adapter• Place Name label on Adapter• Connect 2 parts of adapter.• Place adapter in a pouch• Do not leave grey plug attached to

the machine as you transport it. It will break.

Setting up Laptop • Mr. Hotz will lead you through the

configuration.• DO NOT PRESS ANYTHING UNTIL

TOLD. • Mr. Prior and peer ministers will

assist with any problems.

Configuring the Laptop• Turn the laptop ON• Whenever you reimage your

laptop, you will be doing the next 2 steps.

• Just Watch. Do not Touch.• If it does not start like everyone

else’s, contact Mr. Prior

Change the laptop’s name• Right-click My Computer• Click Properties• Click Computer Name Tab• Type your name in computer

description• Click Change• Computer Name is your 8 letter

code: i.e. 14SmiMar• OK - Do NOT restart.

Change the Account Name• Start – Control Panel• User Accounts• Click Change your Account Name• Account Name is 14SmiMar• Restart

Connect to the Internet• Visit a few sites• REMEMBER –

• Proxy server checked at school• Proxy server unchecked at home

To connect at home• Click the “green bars”• This opens Access Connections• Click “FIND”

• The laptop should find your router• Highlight and click connect• You will need a password if your home

wireless is encrypted

Laptop Problems at home ?• Bring the laptop to 121 on Tuesday

– before school or whenever.• Mr. Hotz will be away til Tuesday.• Visit “Laptop Help” on the website

for suggestions

Open Microsoft Word• Click File• Click Options• Personalize with your full name

and initials
