Benefits of supplementsIsobel Peters, Senior Projects Manager

19 May 2015

• Separate issue featuring content which may not fit the main journal. For example it may be:

- of specialist interest

- paid for centrally by an organization, or sponsored

- peer reviewed by a different process (to journal standards)

• Editors retain full control – may request changes or reject articles or abstracts

• Two main types: articles or meeting abstracts

What is a supplement?

How do we produce them?

Specialist team at BioMed Central provides support

Aim to allow some flexibility in the process

Follow up for repeat publications

• Bring additional content to the journal

• Create new connections/relationships with organizing groups

Benefits to the journal

In 2011 Microbial Cell Factories published proceedings of the International Symposium on Lactic Acid Bacteria as a supplement. The journal then published the proceedings from the next symposium in 2014.

• Widen exposure to new audiences

Benefits to the journal

For both supplements, we produced printed copies which were distributed at the symposium.

• Present PR/social media promotion opportunities

Benefits to the journal

For the 2014 supplement one of the Supplement Editors wrote a blog.

• Accesses and citations

Articles in supplements do count towards the journal’s impact factor. (Short conference abstracts do not.)

Benefits to the journal

Other benefits:

•Underline journal scope and encourage submissions in a specific area

•Offer exchange marketing opportunities with conferences

•Allow flexibility (non-standard article types, pricing, etc)

Benefits to the journal

• We hope to see some new enquiries for supplements in your journal soon

• For more information see the Editors pages
