PJ Harvey & Co. Celebrate a New Tome From Sue Webster

Ashley Simpson April 5, 2015

Sculptures assembled from “mummified” animals from the pet cat’s evening hunt, neon light fixtures poking at sexual taboo and religious cliché, rubbish fused together and transformed into human figures—the work of collaborating British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster has always leaned toward the dark, the Brutalist, the cleverly unnerving, and the violently human. Now, one half of the duo, Webster, is bringing the viewer inside the artist’s mind with The Folly Acres Cook Book, a just-released collection of homegrown recipes, illustrated diary entries, and autobiographical scrawlings rendered by Webster from 2010 to 2014. The artist’s good friend Polly—aka PJ Harvey—contributed a poem—and was on hand to perform a few choice tracks at the book’s launch at Damien Hirst’s Soho studio-cum-shop, Other Criteria, last night. “I had to leave the room and come backstage and cry,” related Webster after the performance, sparkling rosé in hand, “because that last song of Polly’s…”

The book, Webster said, “started life out of necessity,” with jotted-down recipes from her Gloucester farm, and grew into a personal endeavor quite organically. “Somewhere along the way, my artistic instinct got the better of me,” said Webster, “and what started life with good intention as an authentic cookbook somewhere in the style of Gwyneth Paltrow—it started to melt away halfway into something far more interesting and less practical.”

The resulting tome—filled with playful drawings, detailed recipes, recollections of canned meals, Greyhound bus rides punctuated by food hall scavenging, and tales of farm life—is “some confessed journey of my life through food,” explained Webster. “There’ll be more writing and less pictures in the next one,” she promised, pausing to sign Glenn O’Brien’s book, as the evening came to a close. “I know exactly what it is. I’ve already started it—this is a semiautobiographical journey of my life through food, and I think I’m going to do my life through Siouxsie and the Banshees.”
